Doctor Who?

Hm.  I just read on IMDB.com that Titanic made $1.8 Billion and Avatar so far has made $1.14 Billion.  I know it has a way to go but I would say if it continues to be a hit in Europe and Asia it could tie the record at least.  I don't know about you but I know some people who have not seen it yet but are planning on seeing it in the next week or two.  Anyone else think it has a chance?

It only has a chance if it has real legs in theaters. We won't know that for a few weeks. Either way, James Cameron has licence to make whatever he wants next. I'm hoping he does something like Battle Angel Alita. That could potentially have a better story than the very derivative Avatar.

Yeah. I think Avatar is going to have to get people to go back and see it again. I remember there was a ton of people that saw Titanic in the theater like three or four times.

Oh, and James Cameron has a license to print money as well!

Well from what I have read it is doing really well in Europe and Asia and there people are going back.  Also I know i will go again if I get a chance.  Also I don't know what it is doing elsewhere but my local theater is still giving it the same number of showings they gave it on  the opening weekend,I can't remember the last time they did that a month after a movie was released.  Also I don't think there is anything coming out before March that will really challenge it.

Well I saw the movie with a friend who was watching it for the third time, and I wouldn't mind seeing it again myself.  The crowd was still huge, we had to show up about two hours early for good seats

Yeah, I know people who love it (even though they acknowledge that it's not the most original story)  and have seen it two or three times.  And are planning on taking friends to see it.

I also know people who recommend seeing it high a la Fantasia - just to sit and watch the images and colors in 3-D and screw the story - and I doubt that's an original thought.  So that will probably get Cameron repeat business as well.

Doctor Who?

Even if it doesn't break the record it made ove a billion dollars in less then a month.  That has got to be a record of some kind.  I mean i don't even know how you do that.  It doesn't seem like there would be enough hours or enough people.

More people probably saw Titanic.  Regular ticket prices have gone up and theaters charge a premium for 3D and Imax.  In New York where we saw it, the 3D prices were $16.50.  Just to watch a regular movie in New York costs somewhere between $10.50 and $12.50.  When Titanic came out, ticket prices were still around $7 to $8.  And the vast majority of Avatar's tickets are the 3D prices.  So Titanic really was quite an accomplishment while Avatar's numbers are a product of inflation.
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

Doctor Who?

I ticket only costs $7.50 where I live now Avatar cost $10.00 and i thought that was kind of steep.  I'm glad i don't live in new York.  Those theaters should be ashamed of themselves.  Still my thing is if you are going to adjust for infation i think you should count dvd rentals, sales, and tv showings for newer movies just to be fair.  i mean the only reason old movies used to stay in theaters so long and everyone used to go see them was because they didn't have Tv or DvD.

Everybody knows that.

Ironically, if they do a sequel, maybe the story will be better? There is no Dance with WOlves 2 orFern Gully 2 for them to copy directly from.

Edit: Oh, FUCK!

Doctor Who?

But then again the same could be said of titanic beating star wars.  I think when Star wars came out a movie ticket only cost $3.00 but then again VHS wasn't really around back then so if you wanted to seee it you had to go to theaters to see it.

And for a long time, Lucas swore up and down that he would never, ever, ever release his SW films on home video.  That (after the trilogy was finished) he was going to release them to the theaters every seven years like Disney used to do with their classics.
