So, after hearing my friends go on and ON about how amazing this movie was, I finally went to see it tonight.

And I agree, the visual affects are absolutely stunning and will be guaranteed a visual effects win at the Oscars. The creature and set designs were also absolutely gorgeous and I expected nothing less than from a Cameron film.

That being said, I still maintain that James Cameron is that most rare of directors in the sense that he is a great visionary but not a great storyteller. The plot just dragged on forever and was perhaps one of the most predictable and obvious stories that I've ever seen (Nature good. Military BAD). And it gave me no real connection to any of the characters, with the only exception being thanks to Zoe Saldana's strong acting ability.

On the other end of that particular spectrum is Sam Worthington, who is quite possibly one of the most bland actors that I have ever seen. And yes, while I'm aware that the Na'vi were created using motion capture, how is it freakin' possible that his CGI character could express more genuine emotion than his live counterpart? How? Hats off to Stan Winston for that one.

Technically innovative, for sure, but not the greatest movie ever made. Although I'm sure some people will be shouting it from the rooftops for a while.

Don't know about the military BAD part......it was obviously a mercenary operation(A guy in a suit was in charge of these hired thugs!)....And a  disabled veteran was the hero of the movie. This was about greed.

And as far as I remember, countries like the USA were simple farming nations, living off the land(nature). It's only since the 1940's and 50's that the USA has become a military focused nation. (military = jobs + security = GOOD!)

Because...

  • As a marine, he was expected to have his "game face" on at all times?
  • That stuck there in that chair he was depressed and semi-shut down?
  • He only felt "alive" out there in the jungles of the planet....so it shows on his face?

Exactly.  Another thing they didn't stress enough in the film.  For all we know, these guys attacking the Na'vi was exactly the opposite of the government's policy and they would have stopped it if they'd known.

QuoteAlien Sex Scenes Cut from Avatar May Pop Up in DVD

Stop reading now if you have not seen James Cameron's epic sci-fi masterpiece, Avatar, because this article contains at least one PLOT SPOILER.

For those of you who have seen the movie already, you're aware of the very brief scene depicting the coupling of Jake Sully's (played by Sam Worthington) avatar body with the alien Na'vi, Ney'tiri (Zoe Saldana). Very little was shown of that encounter, but you may get your chance to see exactly how the Na'vi "do it" when the DVD comes out, said Cameron in a recent group interview.

We had it in and we cut it out. So that will be something for the special edition DVD, if you want to see how they have sex.
If you guessed that the strange tendrils the Na'vi use to connect or "sync" with other creatures on Pandora might have something to do with how they "get their groove on," you would be right, according to Saldana.

If you sync to your banshee and you're syncing to a tree, why not sync into a person? I almost feel like you'll have the most amazing orgasm, I guess. It was a very funny scene to shoot because there were so many technical things that sometimes you have to keep in mind that paying attention to all those might disrupt the fluidity of how a scene is supposed to take place.

And because Jim was shooting for a PG-13 rating, we couldn't move in certain directions. The motion would look a little too past the PG-13 rating standards. So it was really funny for Sam and me. We had a lot of giggles there.
