Doctor Who?

I'm hoping it will knock titanic out of first place.  I am just glad that it stoped Twilight or transforers from being the top grossing movie of 2009.  Really I enjoyed it.  Was the story new or the characters good?  No but Cameran doesn't do that so i didn't expect it.

I don't think it'll beat Titanic....Titanic stayed in the theaters for nearly a year(10 months)! Avatar will be out of the theaters in 4-5 months and onto DVD/BluRay.

Though it's doing very well in China....so who knows? Plus the Chinese think the story is about them!

"Avatar" has struck a chord with local auds because of the way it deals with people being forced to move from their homes – this is a big issue in China where land grabs by unscrupulous real estate developers, aided by corrupt officials, are a national scandal.

Iconic local author and blogger Han Han said in his blog: "There were no directors, producers or actors present on stage, but this was the first time that I heard applause in a movie house where the credits came on."

"Brute-force eviction is unimaginable for audiences in other countries because they think that it can only happen on alien planets or in China," he wrote, giving the movie 10 out of 10 if seen in IMAX 3-D.

Wanda International Cinemas told the Global Times newspaper that Monday's premiere in Beijing netted more than 600,000 yuan ($88,000) at their hardtops in the capital, despite the heavy snowstorm and traffic difficulties, and manager Chen Hongwei said it was a dead cert that "Avatar" would hit the 500 million yuan ($73 million) mark.

Well that is interesting.  I don't see anything coming in the next couple of months that should be a chalange to Avatar so i think it at least has a chance of getting near Titanic.

MWolf

If they had the Smurf Sex Scene then it would have already beat Titanic.

People's obsession with the sexuality of Avatar is hilarious to me

He did in Aliens.  That was a solid story and great characters.  But I wasn't really expecting that here.

I figured this was another of his "inventing" movies like The Abyss.  In that movie it seemed to be all about the new methods of filming underwater and the diving helmets that let the actors be seen from three sides....all of that stuff.   And The Abyss is a good story but breaks no new ground at all.

Maybe next movie all of the technology will be there for him already....and he can focus more on the story.  But that seems to be his pattern.

Doctor Who?

What story?  maybe it's just how much Doctor Who i have watched but i don't see anything new in millitary team gets traped on a planet and attacked by aliens.  Also the characters were nam vet stereo types.  Now that being said there is nothing wrong with useing an old story type and just telling it well, movies can be verry good when done like that.  if you ask me that is what Cameran does in pretty much all his movies.  He takes something we have seen before and tells it better then  we have seen it before.  There is nothing wrong with that and when people complain that that is what happened with Avatar i have to wonder if they have seen Cameran's other movies.  i don't go to a cameran movie to see something new, because i know that will not happen.

It's not so much that Cameron's been doing original stories before. It's that he took fairly unoriginal, almost generic material and ideas and made them special, and took standard character types and made us care about them. Neither was really present in Avatar, which rides the visuals to cover for the profoundly dull story and characters. Hence all the outcry.

Yup, his space marines vs. blue furries is definitely way better than anything in Platoon.  ::)

Well I liked the lead characters I couldn't care less about the supporting characters or villains that that is par when it comes to big blockbuster movies.

When did I say Avatar was better then Platoon.  I have never seen Platoon but I don't think Avatar was trying to be Platoon.  I have to say I did like it more then Dances with Wolves.

I just saw it.  Thought it was one of the best sci-fi movies I've ever seen.

Putting this in the right thread now.

Saw it last night.  (IMAX 3-D)  They were out of glasses when we first showed up, and we had to wait for a load of them to be sanitized for us.  Most of the audience didn't get glasses until right before the trailers.

Other than that and some bad overcooked popcorn, I have no complaints.

Greatly enjoyed the movie, the story wasn't entirely original but moreso than a lot of movies I've seen in recent years.  However old the story, it was updated and told well, and the visuals were incredible.  I liked the use of 3-D too, it helped make the environment look more real and was a lot more convincing than I've been used to with 3D, usually looking like moving flat panels in front of eachother.  There were a couple possible vertigo-inducing moments when they're flying or jumping around high points, but I never felt like I had to look away.  In fact during the last hour or so I think I barely blinked.
