So what have we learned from Starship Troopers?

I learned what they concentrated so much on Jake Busey's big teeth, they apparently missed HIS BART SIMPSON HAIR!

I did not learn why her copilot/boyfriend guy gave her the knife and just let the brain bug suck out his brain, rather than just cut the probe himself.

He had to die.  To show what a decent guy he was.  And also to show how the whole brain sucking thing worked.

Quote from: k1 on August 16, 2013, 11:18:50 AMThere's 3 movies & a bunch of animated ones. 8 or 9 of them I think. They swapped out "Starship Troopers" for "Roughnecks" in a bunch of the titles.

From what I've heard secondhand, the animated series is, shockingly enough, actually based on the world of the book, so they called it "Roughnecks" just so people wouldn't associate it with the movie.

The animated series does borrow some ideas from book that weren't in the movie. Most notably the fact that the infantry in the book had armored power suits. However, the bugs are straight out of the movie. In the book, they had ships and laser weapons. The animated series had mostly positive critical response, but it has the major drawback that the last few episodes were never finished.

I learned that you can bring back a guy from the dead with green liquid and some robot healing things but apparently if a girl dies she gets her coffin ejected into space. What the hell, movie? Why do you have to be so misogynist?

Also, I've been following Jake Busey on Twitter and had no idea he was in this.

Also also, there is a Starship Troopers anime OVA series based on the books that came out in 1988 but no one saw fit to license it for an English release. Bummer.

Ten lessons I learned from Starship Troopers:

Ammunition is limitless. You only need to actually reload your weapon for dramatic effect.

You can travel to the farthest reaches of the universe and still keep running into the same five people you went to high school with.

"Stand in the open and shoot wildly" is a viable military strategy.

Explosives are a highly effective weapon and must therefore be used as sparingly as possible.

Insects can survive on a barren planet with no plants, food, or water in evidence.

Left on that planet, they will naturally evolve the ability to shoot fire from their heads and plasma from their butts.

Physics and gravity have no effect on football games.

Saving a wounded comrade is an unnecessary inconvenience. Merely shoot them and move on.

Mile-long starships can be fully operated by a lone pilot.

You can show people impaled, dismembered, disemboweled, decapitated, and torn completely in half, but naked breasts are offensive and must never be seen.
It is easier to destroy than to create.
More fun, too.

What I didn't get was why she got a big funeral when over 300,000 troops had already died without such honors.

To be fair, that was already a well known fact.

Quote"Stand in the open and shoot wildly" is a viable military strategy.

What I love is how many shots there are where their guns are not even remotely pointing at what they're hitting.

Add "suggesting that they might be drinking beer" to that, and you have FX edit version. Seriously, it's okay to send our kids off to war, but don't let them drink beer. That stuff'll kill ya.

I learned that no-one with an IQ over 25 can watch this movie without Rifftrax.

I was pretty pissed off that Dizzy died, yet "bitch".. I mean Carmen lived. Seriously, I detested Carmen.

Interesting fact: In the book, Dizzy was a guy, who died in the first chapter and was never mentioned again. Basically they just made up a whole new character and just lifted a random character name from the book to tie the two together.

Because they were merely soldiers who died for their planet. She was his high-school football teammate. Put some value on the woman's life, for God's sake.

Also, you know, the sex...

I wondered about that too, why she got a funeral like that. Although at least she didn't have the indignity of bagpipes to ruin it like poor Spock did.

The misogynist aspect I thought was clearly done on purpose as part of the "satire". That's why the female cadet is kicked out over the guy getting shot in the head in the training drill, but Rico, who was actually ENTIRELY RESPONSIBLE for it, is given a pass.

Yeah, Carmen was pretty annoying. Clearly flirting with another guy when her boyfriend is RIGHT THERE! And the guy is acting like every sleazy asshole who women fear is going to start talking to them at a bar. But Carmen is all smiles at this potential rapists' attention. Seriously, that guy acts like he has roofies in a holster.

Diz was rather stalker-ish. And I'm glad that the riffs really took that and ran with it. I think it's part of the misogynist attitude of the movie, since she died right after her life's goal of boning the bland leading man.
