It seems like a bad idea to not lock down your systems when a rogue AI supposedly kills your robo butler and check what else it has been accessing.
It is, which is why Tony is too dependant on his machines, and thinks they can solve everything.

Yeah, but you dont need a robo butler to know your factory is building something.  It seems like a bad idea to not lock down your systems when a rogue AI supposedly kills your robo butler and check what else it has been accessing.

You're assume his factory wasn't building something before, or that it doesn't regularly build things? Or that, for some reason he can hear it from the hangout lounge they have? You accept a flying robot, but not soundproofing?
FINE

He doesn't need to hear it.  Jarvis was gone, his entire computer network was still running.  I just find it hard to believe would just let things happen that he doesn't know about.  I guess that could have happened.  I think its dumb that they didnt even have one throw away line that might have happened.

Almost like Tony's hubris and relying on robotics to fix everything was a plot point  :P

I was under the impression that the second version was built at the hydra facility.  Wasn't there something there that looked like Ultron when the Avengers went to get the scepter?

That was one of the aliens from the first Avengers film.

Damn... taking me a LOT longer to think/type tonight than usual: seven additional posts since I started this one.

Tony already had Ultron in his system - well, the largest part of it, anyway - as the core of it was Tony's design.  But it was only the infinity stone's consciousness that made it work.  So the core of the AI was already there in his system...  nothing to 'lock down' against, as that was where it was originally sourced.

Plus, Tony didn't learn until after Ultron (the cobbled-together one) was already attacking them that the AI/stone combination truly worked in the first place, if I remember correctly (I may not be remembering correctly, I was sadly in no mental condition to actually be at a 3D IMAX presentation that day).  And by that time, Ultron likely already had commandeered the suit-making shop to make his new self-designed body while he distracted them with the piecemeal one.

Since Iron Man [1], Tony has let Jarvis do all sorts of construction while he's 'not in the office'.  In the Marvel Film Universe, he's not known for being real hands-on with the machining end of things.

all right, fine! some guy named hank pym was secretly building a robot body in his garage and when thor killed ultron, his robospirit floated through the aether until it found this fancy new body. its first act upon waking was to kill the pym guy and erase all knowledge of him from every computer everywhere, which is why he didn't show up in the rest of the movie. are you happy now?

I like this. ;D  They forget about this 'Pym' guy until about four months later when he shrank into view in his own film.

If a renegade AI takes over your equipment and you dont shut everything down and make sure it cant get into anything else or you are an idiot.  If it is building something you didn't authorize you stop that too.  Its just bad writing in my opinion.

But he didn't know it had taken over until it was too late.  And, by that time, with the infinity stone's intelligence guiding things I would think it would be difficult to take control back (until Ultron vacated the premises on his own, at which point Tony reintegrated Jarvis).

But in this case, I agree it would have been nice to have a sentence to say the above, as what I just wrote in this post is a fan wank explanation, not inherent to the MCU (as points in the previous post had been explicitly shown).

Thinking about it again I'm pretty sure all the bodies were already made by the time he met the Avengers for the first time, he just improved them in Russia and stuff

As for as I remember there was nothing about that mentioned in the film.

No, I don't think it was said but when all the Ultrons are working together there's no sign of more being made I don't think

I never understood why the infinity gem had an intelligence inside of it. Do the other stones have that? Was it originally some other creature that got trapped in it or something? As described by the Collector in Guardians of the Galaxy, the stones are "singularities concentrated into ingots". That certainly doesn't seem to indicate they would have brain functions, just powerful objects.

Darth Geek

And if the singularities were made into ingots, did it itch a little bit?
