QuoteCalling people on flame baiting with a retaliatory flame or "calling their shit" is as old as the Arpanet

technically its older than "whatever you say bounces off me and sticks to you" but its age hardly gives it any sort of validity.

I know you are, but what am I?

Scott could have made a final post and locked this bitch 20 pages ago, but guess what?  He didn't.  Why?  He created the perfect environment for simple amino acid thoughts to chain together into protein posts that formed single cell ideas that produced complex multi celled flames.

Like a kid with an ant farm, he having too much fun watching the ants fight over a sugar cube to end it.

i didnt ask you to prove god.  i asked you to explain a lack of evidence negates ANYTHING existence.  that question has NOTHING to do with gods existence.  Unless you intend to use merely this example.

does that even mean anything?  my programming???  I find it obnoxious to use emotional outbursts to derail civilized conversation because conversation is interesting and outbursts are asinine.  if i wanted pointless conversations i would talk to the people here next to me, i would need the Internet.

There is an airtight locked door in front of you. You do not have the key. Therefore, nothing exists behind the door because you can not provide any evidence via the scientific method to prove it's there. Seems reasonable.  ::)

There is no scientific evidence that supports the existence of god.  Period.

And yes, you were programed since you were a child to believe in god.  If not by your parents by influences around you.  It's hard to break your programing, but it is possible.  Questioning faith and the nature of god is your first step to your emancipation.  If you want to make a point about how god and religion are separate things, they aren't.  Why?  Because the bible says so.

Shaking things up with "outbursts" draws people out to say what they truly think, and most of the time makes people self analyze as they try and grip their views on the proceedings.

And then it also makes people take their ball and go home.

Holy crap I don't want to get into this debate but this is wrong:
QuoteI could have brought up case studies about prayer and it's affect on patient outcomes (it has none), yet I would have heard 20 messages about how "god has a plan".

What literature have you been reading? I have stacks and stacks of research that says prayer may help in patient recovery, mental health and overall well being.  Some of them have flaws, but I think the overall opinion is that faith can help.  Belief in a higher power gives people comfort in their time of need which helps their overall attitude which in turn helps their health.  I can dig up the specific articles in a bit if you don't believe me.

I don't believe in "God" persay (a god than answers prayers or is a "being") but I don't think you can deny that prayer and faith has an impact on believers (some anyway).  It makes them feel more complete and therefore their outcomes in healthcare are better.  There are also studies on people who are alone without a support system that say they do worse than those who do have a support system.  Religion gives people a support system.  God is always there.  Rather you believe in him or not, a higher power with a plan is a comforting thought to those who do.

There's something in medicine called the placebo effect and it's well documented.  I'm not saying God answers prayers and I'm not saying he doesn't.  I am saying that sometimes believing something works makes it work and that's documented in the literature.

The conversation was going there anyway, people are just too comfortable and "nice" to say what they really feel.

You say "nice", I say "don't want to be assholes"

The placebo effect is exactly what I'm talking about.  Prayer does not effect surgical outcomes any more than slipping someone a "super cure" sugar pill does.  Positive thinking has the same effect of patient outcomes as prayer, which is no say (again) none.  Recovery rates are the same in all studies.

It's the same logic and reasoning that says that talking to plants makes them grow better (regardless of whatever bullshit you saw on mythbusters)

That's the very definition of unreasonable.  It flies in the face of all your past experience and knowledge.  You could however make confident predictions, such as "there is a floor on the other side of that door" or "there is another side to this door" based on how these have been true every other time you've walked through a door.  To ridiculously claim that nothing exists behind the door is based on no reason whatsoever, and would be akin to claiming that a polka dotted elephant existed behind the door, or any other number of things.

I just had my chest repainted... the Decepticon icon was looking tarnished.

The bottom line is, it's the job of the believer to prove the belief, not the other way around.

I also continue to call shenanigans on ScottH for letting this turdfest continue.

QuoteYou wouldn't run around saying

"No gods is a something."

Because that would be moronic, even though you tried to do that above.

Because again I am not the one making the assertion. Lets turn this around, if I was to make an absolutely ridiculous assertion, lets say..

True but the CONCEPT of no god is something, thats the SOMETHING that we were asking for proof of.

No, all you are doing is playing the same word game as Tyrant, deliberately ignoring the idea of the sentence, taking some words in the sentence bundling them together as a concept and demanding I prove your concept.

It's no less silly than this.

Person A: There are aliens on pluto.
Person B:What? Why?
Person A: ...
Person B: I think there are no aliens on pluto.
Person A: A-ha! 'no aliens' is a concept! Prove 'no aliens'!

QuoteYour inability to disprove this, in no way makes it true.

It no way makes it false, both statement have been stated repeatedly in this thread without any REAL progress on what this implies.

It implies as far as im concerned that beleif in either A is not true or A is true is irrelevant.  You can make no progress on the topic and it is stalled, but with as many supposed relativists on this board as there are it would seem silly to say you shouldnt beleive either way.

No it doesn't make it false, though you would be considered an idiot to believe that there are 12 Gods named Bruce just because I said so. Without me providing evidence that there are 12 gods named bruce, the sensible postion would be not to believe it.

That would be all fine and good if we were talking about confident predictions. Many people seem perfectly confident in predicting that God and Heaven exist... and all they have is a locked door in front of them. That locked door might not be opened until they die... I'm not a religious man by any means... but whatever.  The original thrust of the argument was "no proof negates existence"... not assumptions based on past experience.
