I'm sorry I've been neglectful.  My wife just had hand surgery and my boss has been wanting me to work extra.

No worries. Just goofin'. The poll's not going anywhere.

Hope the wife's doing well.  :)

I hope things calm down for the two of you soon.

So, no handies for awhile?

It depends on how much extra work he does for his boss.

I'm back!  Poll is up.

I scheduled this one for 2 days just to make sure no one misses the return.  If we get above 20 votes, I may end it early.

Several of these I haven't seen. And I'm sure as hell not voting for Momento :P  IMHO Crouching Tiger gets way more praise than it should, although it's not bad by any stretch.

I'll sort of agree with that, but it did expose that type of movie to a much wider audience than ever before, for that reason alone it deserves to be on the list.

What's your issue with Memento?

Four Lions, Kung Fu Hustle and Memento for me

Relaxing Dragon

Memento, Scream, and Up for me.

I dig Four Lions a lot, and I love that it was nominated, but I had to go with these three (and I'm also curious as to what the problems with Memento are).

I've given up deciding what "deserves" to be on the list. I've shifted by votes to the more obscure titles, mostly, because to me the list is more interesting that way.

When this whole issue came up that was my reasoning behind it

My approach for what I've been choosing is sort of an amalgam of different ideas (I think many were expressed by others early in the thread).  My selections have been 'if someone was new to this country (or planet), what films would be most important for them to see in order to get a handle on what this country is 'about' culturally'.

In some cases, that is film history (showing where our entertainment grew from [e.g. Chaplin]), in others it is 'often referenced' films [e.g. The Matrix], in others it is 'fine example of the craft of moviemaking' [e.g. Bridge on the River Kwai], and in still others it may simply be 'what people liked enough to pay a lot of money to see, and often repeatedly' [e.g. Avatar, and, if nominated, Titanic, and if/when it might be renominated, The Avengers, because any film that could get the country/planet - in probably the worst world-wide financial collapse we've seen (since film was created, at least) - go and shell out over a billion dollars to see, is 'relevant' to the planet/country... regardless of it's other film qualities].

[[Too soon to be doing 'thinky' stuff again: headache.]]

Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolff? is on TCM tonight, so set those DVR's if you have never seen it.  It is a fantastic film.
