I'd like to nominate a Werner Herzog documentary but I'm not familiar with all of them. Grizzly Man is probably his most well-known work, but I don't know if it's his best.

Have you seen Cave Of Forgotten Dreams yet?  That's pretty amazing, but more for the cave itself than the stuff Herzog does. He does throw in some of his trademark craziness, but not a lot.  It's amazing in 2D but really amazing in 3D since the drawings often take advantage of the shape of the cave walls.  Only a few scientists a year are permitted in the cave so his 3D film is the only way most people are ever going to see it and feel like you are inside it.

I did see that one, it was pretty good. One of my favorites of his is when he's in Antarctica and he's busting chops all Herzog style, except the people he's filming don't realize it. For a documentarian, he's got a great way of being a part of and yet not being a part of his subjects. You're never quite sure if he sympathizes with them or holds them in complete contempt. I think Grizzly Man might have been the best example of this. I came away from the film thinking that Herzog thought Timothy Treadwell was completely insane and kind of deserved what he got, but he felt bad for the man all the same, but still, I'm not really sure exactly what Herzog thought. He did a great job of being sympathetic and showing the crazy at the same time.

If Ken Burn films can be counted I would like to nominate The Civil War.

As far as I know, it never aired in theaters.  Nor could it.  It's flippin long.  Not that airing in theaters is a rule, but if we allowed it, it would open the door to all sorts of things that aren't necessarily movies.

Oh yeah I loved that one too, it's so recent I completely blanked on it.

One of my favourite docs is Dear America: Letter Home From Vietnam, but it was on HBO orignally which, I understand, is neither the movies nor TV.

Well I know they some times have multi night showings in theaters here for rich PBS supporter types(I don't know if it is one of the films that has been released that way)but then again he come from Delaware so it may not be a wide spread thing so i take your point.

Then I would like to nominate Shadow of a Doubt for the next round.

I'd go with Little Dieter Needs to Fly.

This is total admiration on Herzog's part.  There's no winking or sly nods at the camera when he's interviewing his subject.  It's a great story.
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

It is, the fictionalized version isn't bad either but the documentary is far better.

One of my favourite moments was, I think, around the time of Grizzly Man, he was interviewed on air by the Detroit Market's real dumb DJ duo Drew and Mike. They thought they were really tweaking this stuffed shirt intellectual, all the while being too stupid to realize he was running rings around them. They're so proud of it they replay it every so often, still not aware that they're happily broadcasting a sound drubbing from the delightful tutonic genius.

Christian Bale did some really good work in that movie.
