Thing is, (And they pointed it out themselves) The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are very pro-Christian books. They're not all in-your-face about it, but the Christian ideals are alluded to. Tokien himself was a die-hard Catholic, and even pulled the more-notoriously-Christian C.S. Lewis off the Atheism-train. Don't know or care about Jackson's beliefs, but unless he's changing the message of The Hobbit from "Go out there and live life to the fullest" to "Start hating God", I don't see the harm in letting him direct a positive story rooted in some Christian believes.

If my Christian bretheren MUST go about throwing stones (Protip: We're not supposed to.) they should at least throw them at the other team.

And that's all the overt Christianity I have in me for this year.I shall resume being more subtly Christian now. :^)

Also unless Jackson has changed a great deal since 2001 I don't think he is going to be messing with the message of the books.  He didn't with The Lord of the Rings so what makes these people think he will with The Hobbit?

Yes he did. He completely changed Faramir's character. He rewrote Aragorn. He massively rewrote Arwen.  Maybe if you read the books you'd know these things, but books aren't shown on blu-ray players.

You know what the old me would have told you off for that pointless personal attack that missed the whole point of my post.  The new me sees you for what you are.  A sad wast of a human life. You feel so bad about yourself you have to grab any chance you see to attack other people claiming they are more stupid then you just so you can prove to yourself that your are not a total waist of a human life. No facts that I put before you will change your mind because you have to attack other people for being more stupid then you or your life has no point and you would have to end it. These pointless personal attacks are your only reason for living. They don't hurt me in the least they just prove what a wast you are and i will not be wasting any of my time defending myself from them.  If you need to attack me in order to keep going feel free, but I will not be engaging with you any more.

Everyone please ignore him from now on,I don't need you to defend me against him.  All it does is derail threads and it is not worth it.  I don't need to be defended from attacks by "people" like him.

Thank you.

Now about that Hobbit movie that is coming out in a year that is based on one of my favorite books.

I have to say, the "Level 4" differences that the writer claims "Changed the story" were almost all rather nitpicky.  Of all those he mentioned, his objections to the changes to Arwen were the most significant in how they changed the story.  However, even he had to admit that Jackson et al had fairly valid reasons for making those changes.

The changes to Arwen were all intended to keep her fresh in the minds of the audience, thus reminding them why Aragorn would reject Aeowyn (probably misspelled...).

Im is right (if overly rude in expressing it) in saying the the characters were rewritten.  However, those changes didn't change the "spirit" of the characters, change their place in the story or undermine the motivations that they had in the book.  It isn't as though he made Gandalf a bad guy...

I'm pretty sure he'll do much the same thing in The Hobbit.  My biggest concern isn't the humanoid characters.  I'm more worried about Smaug.  If PJ makes Smaug a regular roaring fire breathing dragon who just attacks, it will undermine the story.  If Smaug can talk, there are other problems.  Talking dragons tend to come out looking cartoonish (Dragonheart).  Working around the talking issue by making them "speak" telepathically (Eragon) looks like the cheat that it is.

i dont know if the changes he made weren't major. i mean, Tom bombadil and radagast the brown were pretty HUGE characters. the movies just felt empty without them. ;D

Danecho1967

Could you imagine the poor actor who would have played Tom Bombadil?  "Yeah, I played the most hated character on film since Jar Jar Binks."

(I've read the book 6 times now, and I'm here to tell you, that's a character that I really like, but he HAS to remain on the printed page.)

shodan

yea i know. but it would have been interesting to see how they would have had to tone him down a bit.

I'm not worried about that.  The actor who is playing Smaug is really big in the UK right now thanks Steven Moffat's Sherlock.  I don't think Jackson would have cast him or gotten him to play the role if either of those things were going to happen.  Remember before the Lord of the Rings came out no one thought you could do Hobbits,Dwarfs,or trolls with out them looking silly.  I trust Jackson to treat Smaug as a character and not have him look silly.

I'm really hoping they keep with the Smaug design they developed while Guillermo Del Toro was on the project. Just hearing him talk about it in an interview got me stoked for that. A Guillermo designed dragon would be BADASS!

Yea but we have to be careful, it might be speaking in spanish. actually having the dragon speak some strange language that doesn't make it look goofy, then add subtitles, would be a good solution to the whole talking problem.

Purists would go apeshit over that.  He spoke a language that Bilbo understood, so it would have to be a form of the common tongue used in Middle Earth.

(I'm not a purist, BTW.  Just saying.)  :)

And what the heck is with the quote system?  I manually added the extra quote so it would look right.
