What's not to love about a 14 year old in a top hat?
I don't know why, but that just cracked me up  :D

This site has some prime examples of hipsters. For some reason there were a lot of them at the The Room screening I went to.

John Tyler at Cinema Blend explains why Scott Pilgrim failed (even though he liked it). A generally very accurate assessment, I think:

Sure. After all, I'm, not one to beat a dead horse.

I'd still like an answer to my question. What makes Scott Pilgrim a hipster if Tim and Daisy aren't?

While I agree that Tim and Daisy were more nerds than Scott Pilgrim, I really don't buy the idea that he is a "hipster". First off, most people who use that term don't really know what it means (and admittedly I'm not so sure I do either, but I think that's because the term has been diluted so much). Scott is part of a rock band that actually rocks, not some crappy indie art band that thinks it's music is more meaningful than it is. Second, HE ISN'T PRETENTIOUS! Isn't that the real reason people hate hipsters, the incessant self importance and faux meaningful bullshit? Scott and his band don't hang around talking philosophy, politics and have high minded discussions solely so they can make themselves seem smarter than they are. And they don't write peotry or song lyrics that are supposed to be "deep".

One of the things that I liked most about the movie was that I saw all the trailers, and I read all the comics (except the last one), but when I saw the movie, there was still stuff that was new and that made me laugh.

Things like...

...were all great, funny, and new.

I really hope the lackluster boxoffice doesn't hurt his Hollywood clout too much. What I really want is him to do Ant Man next, as that is a superhero movie, so it is more marketable and hopefully more people will apreciate his movie in theaters.

It's almost a guarantee that they'll at least break even from ticket sales, video game sales, and DVD sales.  I'm willing to bet that after all is said and done, they'll be happy with the gross.

Pak-Man

Yeah. This is the kind of movie that flops in theaters but ends up selling jillions upon jillions of DVDs later on.

Also, and with all do respect to Wright, his movies never tend to be big smashes at the box office anyway (well, Hot Fuzz may have done alright, I forget). Doesn't have any effect on how much people love and respect them, and I gather that folks who hire him know what they're going to get at this point. I really hope he does get a big hit one of these days, he deserves it more than most.

EDIT: Yeah, Scott Pilgrim's actually Wright's highest grossing opening weekend. About double Hot Fuzz and nearly quadruple Shaun of the Dead. Make of that what you will.

I thought it was a fantastic movie- but then again, I'm part of the prime target audience: 20-something Torontonian with relationship issues.

The film is definitely a loving tribute to Toronto youth culture, but it really doesn't take itself all that seriously. It pokes fun at the hipsters, posers, goths, nerds, etc. and exposes their various difficulties. It also takes a very basic relationship issue- emotional baggage- and turns it into a Street Fighter-esque visual metaphor that kicks the ass of most chick movies I've ever seen.

I rarely buy movies, but I will definitely be getting "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" on DVD. Possibly even the soundtrack while I'm at it.

But as I said: I'm probably in the prime demographic for this.

See what happens when you do not make movies for the white male, mid-40s demographic?   You are DOOMED to failure, DOOMED I say.

I will now strut around to prove how much I rock and how much I control the world......... maybe even a litte Il Duce pose thrown in for good measure.

P.S.   I will catch this on Netflix.

Strangely, it caught the attention of my dad, who is in his 50s and absolutely hated the first book (doesn't like O'Malley's art). He said the movie looked hilarious though.

So there's that, for what it's worth... I think we just have a movie on our hands that's really, really hard to pigeonhole.
