Also, and with all do respect to Wright, his movies never tend to be big smashes at the box office anyway (well, Hot Fuzz may have done alright, I forget). Doesn't have any effect on how much people love and respect them, and I gather that folks who hire him know what they're going to get at this point. I really hope he does get a big hit one of these days, he deserves it more than most.

EDIT: Yeah, Scott Pilgrim's actually Wright's highest grossing opening weekend. About double Hot Fuzz and nearly quadruple Shaun of the Dead. Make of that what you will.

He may not get big budget films to direct anymore but who cares about that.  I would rather see films like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz anyway.

Me too. Just watching it now 'cause I was in a happy Edgar Wright kind of mood.

Edgar Wright is able to make a relatively low budget movie look like several times that. Guillermo Del Toro is the only one else who I can think of that can make movies this good with that kind of budget nowadays. Robert Rodriguez comes to mind, but his movies are stupid fun, not genuine quality filmmaking.

Aaaaaaannnnndddd... it's a flop:
http://www.deadline.com/2010/08/first-box-office-the-expendables-13m34m-eat-pray-love-8m23m-scott-pilgrim-5m12m/

Came in fourth after Expendables, EPL, and last week's The Other Guys.
Well it never was going to be a big earner, what with it being a must-see to a niche crowd of geeks (and a curiosity to most others), but I do think it's a wee bit early to be calling it a "flop". Or is one day all it takes these days to show if a film is profitable?

Put it this way: Even though it outsold several other movies at our 12-plex, odds are strong that it's already been marked for ouster after its obligatory two weeks are up (almost the exact same thing happened with Kick-Ass).

Such as it has to be I guess. I'll still squeeze in as many screenings as I can, even after it's been booted to the tiny 4 screen downtown where films go to die (just like I did with Fantastic Mr. Fox).

He doesn't get much chance to show it these days since Hollywood keeps giving him mad green to make flicks, but Peter Jackson falls into this category, as well. Part of the reason he could convince people to let him do Lord of the Rings was a little movie called The Frighteners where he promised to take the budget and make it look like he spent ten times as much -- and delivered.

As for Scott Pilgrim, I'm sharpening my poking stick. I will track down all of my friends and poke them repeatedly until they promise to buy the blu-ray. Or the DVD. Or both.

Why am I not surprised by this?  :D

According to Box Office Mojo Scott Pilgrim's budget was around 60M. Hardly the typical size of a summer blockbuster. It's a shame after three stellar movies he isn't more of a household name (although Simon Pegg may be getting there). But I don't see in his movies him fighting against the limitations of budget, so maybe continuing to give him this kind of budget isn't a bad thing. Especially if he can do something a little more assured of success llike a superhero movie next.

I'd like to get it, but right now I'm in a bit of a lot of money trouble.

I'm less annoyed by the game now. I replayed a level or two, got some money, bought some power-ups and things started moving along. I've at least seen Gideon now, even if I haven't beaten him yet.

And as much as I want to see this (and The Expendables and Piranha 3d...) I've got automotive problems right now, so I'm stranded, unless I want to do a 45 minute walk to and from the theater. But I be at RT Live come hell or high water.

Actually, that sentence was referring to Peter Jackson getting the long green for his film budgets. Wright doesn't quite get the kind of money Jackson got for King Kong (207 million).

TheBrotherHardin

Went and saw it with my brother Deke, his gf (who is a big SP fan-has read the comic), and our friend Jeff (who had seen it the night before).

Deke and I didn't dislike it...but we didn't enjoy it as much as we thought we would.  Deke's gf LOVED it and so did Jeff.

I just thought it tried too hard, and I found myself completely unnatracted to Ramona Flowers.

Add another 25 million minimum for marketing.  This needs to sell A LOT of dvds to break even.  I'm gonna try to catch it today because it looks like our theater is already cutting back on the showings and it's not even up to its second weekend yet.
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

Going to see it again right now since I just got out of rifftrax live and have plenty of time before work

Update: still good the second time around

I really hated this movie... but don't worry, that's all I'm going to say about it.
