A Sherlock Holmes movie...has explosions in it.

I...I honestly am not sure what to say right now.
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

Tripe

OK explosions are not necessarily an issue, Anarchists (and other counter Victorian culture types)  loved bombs, hell there's a Conrad story with explosions in it. The question is whether those explosions are there because they genuinely did happen in the 1880s or if they are there to have people go "ooh explosion, I'll watch this then since the big boom makes up for the boring Conan-Doyle shit"

Doctor Who?

Well there is always a chance Bruce Willis will show up for a few seconds just to run away from the explosions.

This movie looks awful to me.

I really wish they were not calling it Sherlock Holmes because it's not Sherlock Holmes.

What exactly makes explosions "exciting," anyway?

Haven't a clue, they're mostly annoying (in films) and possibly life threatening (in reality) but mostly annoying (in films and reality).  :)

I'm going to have to agree with you on that one, it doesn't seem very Holmesian to me... but it might be good as a movie removed from the Holmes mythos.

The trailer also has me excited.

I for one am glad to see a Watson with a closer interpretation to the book. Dr. Watson was always handsome man of action, not the bumbling fat guy that he's usually shown to be.

I've noticed people complaining about Holmes using martial arts...so? He did in the book, and Guy Ritchie confirmed that they're using the exact same style that Holmes practiced in the stories.
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

I'm not sure being a played as a camp nag (as shown in the trailer) qualifies as a "handsome man of action" really. ;) Also, Jude's losing those looks about as fast as his hair is receding.

??? Have you watched the Granada adaptations?

Trumpysgirl

I actually saw his nagging as more of a statement on Holmes' character than anything else. And as for Jude Law, I don't think his looks are diminishing, he's just become such a familiar face that it tends to become irritating after a while.

And no, I haven't seen the Granada adaptions. Are they pretty good?

Yes, it was a statement about how Holmes character really irks the campy nag. What a big girl.

Always thought he looked like Frankie Munez, even more convinced with each passing year.

Yes and if you like the books at all you should get them and watch them all ASAP, Jeremy Brett is far and away the greatest Holmes ever.

I still Like Ian Hart best as Watson but the both Edward Hardwicke and David Burke are excellent (especially the former).

Darth Geek

Figures we get this, when Sherlock Holmes vs. Dracula is considered one of the greatest unmade scripts ever.

a pretty girl is like

Here's Deadline Hollywood Daily's take on the ComicCon panel:

2009 Comic-Con: Robert Downey Jr.
Luke Y Thompson is covering the Con for DHD with an emphasis on Hollywood:

Now Robert Downey Jr is out to present Warner Bros' SHERLOCK HOLMES. He calls him the first superhero, and the first western martial artist. (I do NOT remember that aspect of the books.) "I think the studios are giving me too much credit, thinking I'm smart enough to play this guy." Looking at the clips, one might suggest that smartness wasn't the main reason, as the movie clearly plays up the drug-addict side of Holmes.

Downey calls Guy Ritchie "a badass gentleman Englishman," and the director is barely mentioned again. He shows what is basically an extended version of the trailer – it is a lot less choppy and looks to (thankfully) be more conventional than the stereotypical Ritchie film. Villain is based on Aleister Crowley – Satanic cult, not unlike the death cult in YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES, perhaps? That 7-ft former WWE wrestler Kurrgan plays an evil henchman.

The construction of Tower Bridge in London looks to be a major setting. The universe of the movie comes from the books, but the plot is original.

Downey says that other versions of Holmes onscreen "misrepresented" the character. 'We went right back to the source." I don't remember Arthur Conan Doyle mentioning perfect abs, though. The movie got going when Downey, post Iron Man, went to Joel Silver and said, "Dude, where's OUR franchise?"

Downey trained in martial arts. "I could windmill through the lot of you right now!" Yet his Holmes is often beaten by a woman, Rachel McAdams' Irene Adler. "It's really embarrassing to get your ass kicked by a girl. Unless you're a girl. But you're still getting your ass kicked."

Asked how much they used the book for inspiration, McAdams, whose character appears in only one short story, says, "I combed the ten pages I was in!"

What was the most challenging for Downey?

"You know how sick I am? I don't think there's anything that can be too challenging for me. I have an illness of confidence."

Ritchie, mostly unmentioned, may still be the wrong guy – but Downey is saying all the right things.
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!
