Just to say, Waterworld didn't make back its money domestically (it cost $150 mil to make), but it did make $88 mil, which is comparatively decent money for something that isn't Waterworld.  It doesn't mean it was GOOD, but a lot of people still went to see it regardless, so by technicality it would still be POPULAR.  And even infamy is a type of popularity, isn't it?

It is sort of funny, though, how it isn't until you go back and look, how history isn't exactly what you thought it was.  I never would've thought that every year there were that many either critical or commercial (undeservedly or not) successes.
One Man Band Riffs.  18 riffs, over 600 served, since 2009.

It also made $175 million foreign, taking its gross to $264 million.  I don't know if, along with marketing and distribution, it made a profit, but that's certainly not the bomb it was perceived as back in the day.

I think what happened was that(As I remember any way)it had a huge marketing push that was pretty much saying it was going to be the next Star Wars,so people got sick of it before they even saw it and then when it wasn't the biggest hit ever it was seen as failure.  I remember there were a ton of toy when I was a kid,and that either I or any of my friends wanted them :D

I guess it depends on whether you consider Avatar science fiction, or just a stupid cartoon made to cheat the largest possible audience out of their money.

But essentially, no. A lack of decent sci-fi for a decade doesn't make a year with three decent movies the best year for sci-fi ever.

I also think last year was a great year for Sci-Fi (although I'd champion '82 as well)
