Doctor Who?

I mean look at last year we got Moon,Star Trek,District 9,and Avatar.  All did well at the box office and got good reviews.  2009 was one of the best years for Sci-FI movies I can remember.  I can't believe I only just noticed this.  Can anyone think of a better year?

a pretty girl is like

Whatever years Wrath of Khan and Empire Strikes Back came out because either of these alone are better than that mediocre lot you listed combined.
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

70-80's Star Wars, the 90's Star Trek TNG movies as well as other flicks (ID4, 5th Element, and others) was Much Better IMO 8)

Doctor Who?

Well I am talking about single year not a decade.

I mean we had Star Trek bringing Trek back from the dead.  Moon,I have not seen it yet but I hear it was awesome.  District 9,brought back the low budget fun quirky Sci-Fi action movie with something to say and was all kinds of awesome to boot.  Then at the end of the year we had Avatar and while it was not the best thing ever it was still good and everyone saw it.  Something tell me that we will not see that kind of a Sci-Fi overload again for a while.

Good question Doc.  I went through the past 28 years and picked out a few of the best or most popular movies of that year.  There's some doozies:

1980 - Empire Strikes Back, Flash Gordon, Superman II and Altered States.

1981 - Mad Max, Time Bandits, Escape from New York, and Scanners.

1982 - Blade Runner, Star Trek II, E.T., and Tron.

1983 - Return of the Jedi, Krull, Videodrome, and Twilight Zone: The Movie.

1984 - Terminator, Dune, Repo Man, 2010, Nineteen Eighty-Four, and Star Man.

1985 - Back to the Future, Brazil, Cocoon, Mad Max 3, and The Quiet Earth.

1986 - Aliens, The Fly, Short Circuit, Star Trek IV.

1987 - Predator, Robocop, Innerspace, and Spaceballs.

1988 - They Live, Alien Nation, Phantasm II, and The Wizard of Speed and Time.

1989 - Back to the Future II, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, The Abyss, and Honey I Shrunk the Kids.

1990 - Total Recall, Back to the Future III, Tremors, and Robocop 2.

1991 - Terminator 2, Star Trek VI, The Rocketeer, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

1992 - Alien 3, Universal Soldier, Lawnmower Man, and Fortress.

1993 - Jurassic Park, Demolition Man, Coneheads, and Fire in the Sky.

1994 - Stargate, Time Cop, Star Trek: Generations, and No Escape.

1995 - 12 Monkeys, Waterworld, Species, and Strange Days.

1996 - Independence Day, Mars Attacks!, Star Trek: First Contact, and MST3k: The Movie.

1997 - Starship Troopers, The Fifth Element, Men in Black, Contact and Gattaca.

1998 - Armageddon, Dark City, Deep Impact, and Pi.

1999 - The Matrix, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Galaxy Quest, and Bicentennial Man.

2000 - X-Men, Pitch Black, The Cell, and Mission to Mars.

2001 - Donnie Darko, AI, Planet of the Apes, and Jurassic Park III.

2002 - Resident Evil, Minority Report, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, and Equilibrium.

2003 - The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, Terminator 3, X-Men 2.

2004 - I, Robot, Chronicles of Riddick, AvP, and Primer.

2005 - Serenity, The Island, War of the Worlds, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

2006 - Children of Men, The Fountain, Deja Vu, and A Scanner Darkly.

2007 - Transformers, Resident Evil 3, I Am Legend, and Sunshine.

2008 - Iron Man, Wall.E, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and Doomsday.

Doctor Who?

Wow!  Good list.  One thing I would not have counted any superhero movies because they are not being made as SCi-Fi movies.  What i mean by that is that they are being made to bring comic books to the screen and aren't really treated like Sci-Fi movies by the studios. Let's face it most Sci-Fi movies face an up hill battle just to get made and comic book movies are just so popular Hollywood doesn't seem to think of them as Sci-Fi even if they are. That is just me.  Pretty impressive list all the same.

Darth Geek

Sorry, but the release of Transformers 2 sullies the entire year no matter what else came out.

Waterworld?  Was there some retroactive appreciation formed for that film that I'm not aware of?   ;)

Me! I like Waterworld.  :)

An impressive list mrbasehart.  Some of the movies listed I wouldn't watch again because they're crap, there's only one I can't watch again because it just creeps me out too much.  That would be Twilight Zone: The Movie.  Just knowing that three people needlessly died during the filming just makes it too uncomfortable to watch.

Ah, but it's also the most important one.  ;)

Me too! Always felt that movie was very unfairly slammed!

Base, that list could use Timecrimes in 2007 and Sleep Dealer in 2008 (they definitely weren't popular, but they were among the best).

But I do agree that 2009 was a great year for Sci-Fi (it was also an amazing year for animation, but that's another matter). Moon and District 9 are two titles that I'd consider Grade-A in the genre, and while Avatar was not great, it was still pretty damn good (and, for better or worse, will likely make a big impact in the genre for years to come). So that's +3 for the year, which is among the tops (most of those years listed have +2 at best, once you weed out the popular-but-not-so-good ones).

Of course, 1982 still beats it, especially if you consider The Thing as Sci-Fi.

I hate all four of the listed movies, haven't seen The Thing though. :P
