Yes possibly, doesn't sound like a Holmes movie though.

And, before you go down your usual path; I understand you aren't familiar with the books or care about fidelity to them. Some people are and do though and so, from that perspective, this doesn't look too promising.

I'm still going to go, it's just a bit of a missed opportunity really.

A recent example: Brideshead Revisited, actually quite an entertaining movie in of itself, utterly and completely misses the point of the book. So as an adaptation it's rubbish. The film is still pretty entertaining.

And, before you go down your usual path;

..you mean not pissing and moaning about a movie I haven't seen?

Nobody is doing that per se, they are responding to the trailer, you do know why trailers are produced right?

They're created to present an impression of the film to the potential audience therefore it is perfectly fine to express one's opinions of said trailer and the impression thereby given wether good or ill.

But, regardless of how you phrase it to yourself, this is your usual path. People have concerns based upon something that the film makers have put out there in order to have people react to and you always jump in with "oh no it's going to be great"

Well that's fine, you are entitled to that opinion, others are equally entitled to react to the material thus far provided in with misgivings.

Like I said, it might very well be entertaining, that won't make it a good adaptation. You have already said you don't know or care about the books. That's fine too. But it's also perfectly fine to have concerns about a film based on the evidence provide, since the filmmakers provide that material so judgments can be made.

Since you find it so irksome to read negative reactions to things, why even bother posting in a thread where you'll encounter then? It's seems somewhat masochistic.

You mean people who like the book(s) may not like the film adaption?!  surely that's not possible, has that happened before?

Well do you understand that? I've not seen any evidence that you do. You seem perpetually shocked that somebody might not be gung ho about any given given film.

This is the quote in your sig:

Quote
BEST.POST.EVER
I once heard a guy state that he enjoyed something I disliked.

But you don't seem to realize that you do exactly the same but from the opposite side, to whit:

QuoteI once heard a guy state that he disliked something I enjoyed.

Except in truth it's more like

QuoteI once heard a guy state that he might dislike something based on the same information that I used to decide I would enjoy it.

There's nothing wrong in taking either of those positions, I'm puzzled as to why you get so bothered about it.

And before you say "oh I'm not bothered about it"  opr "I'm just amused by it", the evidence says otherwise.

Now now, boys. If you can't play nice you can't play at all.

QuoteHe calls him the first superhero, and the first western martial artist. (I do NOT remember that aspect of the books.)

Believe it or not, Holmes did know martial arts.

"The Adventure of the Empty House", Holmes recounts to Watson how he used martial arts to overcome Professor Moriarty and fling his adversary to his death at the Reichenbach Falls. He states that "I have some knowledge, however, of bartitsu, or the Japanese system of wrestling, which has more than once been very useful to me."

Guy Richie said that bartitsu is the martial art that is used in the film.

I'm not expecting the movie to be a completely faithful adaptation (it's obviously not going to be), but at the very least it looks like a fun film and could get people interested in reading the original novels again. Isn't that what we always want for our favorite stories?
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

But it probably won't; on the whole these sort of things don't do that. Generally it works the other way round, people who are fans of a literary property will go to see a movie based on their favourite stories often to be disappointed in the process.

Based on the trailer (see, not the movie itself, which might not be like the trailer at all) and other material thus far provided this isn't going to be a good movie, it might be an entertaining one (though it doesn't look all that entertaining and based on the director's track record I'm dubious about this one too, but you never know) but it won't be a good one from the point of view of representing the source material. That's all, it's no biggie just the way it looks based on available evidence. :)

Even if I like the movie, I won't have any interest in reading the original stories. Just to watch this again:

I'm very rarely surprised that someone doesn't like something I like.  I find it arrogant that people state their own opinions as though it was fact, which I think might be what you're referring to.

Quotethis isn't going to be a good movie

For example.

QuoteI once heard a guy state that he might dislike something based on the same information that I used to decide I would enjoy it.

...because it's needless and frankly rather stupid to completely dismiss a film based on the idea it's being made or a promotional photo/poster in my opinion.   A trailer at least gives you some evidence but even then trailers are cut to appear to a certain market and are often not representative of the film itself.

I honestly don't understand how people have the time or energy to work up the venom they do about adaptions, sequels, remakes, etc. To paraphrase "since they find it so irksome, why even bother paying attention?" nobody is going to change or take the original away from you this is just another telling of the character you can either watch or ignore.  If it's bad, you've still got the books the adaptions you've liked (and perhaps even a greater respect for how good they are) if it's good you've got another facet of something you already like.

QuoteSince you find it so irksome to read negative reactions to things, why even bother posting in a thread where you'll encounter then? It's seems somewhat masochistic.

You mean every thread? I'm reading this thread because this is a movie I'm looking forward to.

QuoteAnd before you say "oh I'm not bothered about it"  opr "I'm just amused by it", the evidence says otherwise.

No, that's usually the response of the people who are posting things like "OH NOES THIS IS THE WORST MOVIE EVER MADE" when I dare offer the opinion that I enjoyed it.

I think you're being unfair and way to hard on yourself when you say you "whine like a bitch", but you do seem to needlessly complain about other people's reactions to things. I just don't think it's healthy.

Anyway, moving on.  :)

ScottotD

have fun going back to complaining about things that don't exist then.

Dear boy let it go, I don't think you whine like a bitch, you need to develop a better self image.

So while Scott tries to like himself a bit more, anyone who's read the books want to talk about the film? :)
