The Watson opposite Basil Rathbone's Holmes was a little bit of a buffoon too, so I'm not too worried about Ferrell.  As long as he's not allowed to be too much like his other roles, I could see it working.

Nigel Bruce.

I give Ferrell a hard time, and I can't stand most of what he does, but it is mostly because he has one set dumb character that he very very rarely deviates from.  The few times he tries to do something else (like his James Lipton impression) it can have okay results.  Therefore I'll back up your point.

I give him a lot of leeway because Anchorman rules.

You can't have TWO Sherlock Holmes movies in Hollywood at the same time. What do they think this is, Robin Hood?

Stranger Than Fiction was like a Jim Carrey movie without the budget for Jim Carrey. I liked the scene where he plays guitar and makes the girl fall in love with him, in a I'm-gay-for-liking-chick-flick-bullshit kind of way.

bratpop

Yeah but Will Ferrell is the new Jim Carrey. Pretty soon, they'll have kids making prequels to his movies.

Jude Law as Watson?  Wouldn't Foppish McFoppy make a better Moriarty?

Jim Carrey blows.  He blows so hard that movies of his I used to enjoy now retroactively are less funny.

You should watch Ace Ventura again.

Not really:

That would be how Sidney Paget drew the Professor in The Strand, there's nothing foppish about Moriarty.

Though Law does have the beginnings of Moriarty's hairline.

Good call, Tripe.  Law already pulled off a very similar look in Road To Perdition.  Can't find any screencaps without his hat off though.

I'm wondering if this is some sort of Early Adventures of Holmes (kinda like after Young Sherlock Holmes, now comes Holmes After University) or if their Holmes will be Holmes in his prime, investigative reputation, cocaine habit and misanthropy in full bloom already.
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

So possibly Irene will show up, I mean we have to have some source of TnA right?  ;)

Oh and yes I couldn't find any pics without the hat either but:

You can kind of see it.

...right but I'm not sure how not matching a drawing means he's not suited, having him as Watson seems a very strange choice.

You're not too au fait with the importance of Paget to the way Holmes'  character, and the world Holmes inhabits was formed are you? Paget is almost as important as Conan Doyle in that respect. Many of the things we think of when we imagine Holmes come not from the text but from the illustrations.

Here's Paget's Watson (on the left):

Give Law a walrus stach and I could see it. But the thing is what Pretty and I were saying (at least I was) is that Law actually possibly could carry off Moriarty based on a previous role. Moriarty isn't foppish but neither is Law always.

Hugh Jackman doesn't look a lot like Wolverine.

Marvel comics artists are as important to the lore as Paget is to Holmes. Simple as that. Sorry, you might not get it, but that's is the case.

ScottotD

No, that was my point.  He only looked a little like the character however his performance transcended a likeness.

I think he's kind of crap myself. But again, even if he wasn't it's immaterial the visual depiction of that character is not as tied up to the character as Paget's illustrations are with the characters in the world of Holmes. It's not just how they look, it's the characters that are conveyed through those illustrations.
