Hollywood in general seems to have a problem with strong, intelligent female characters.  I certainly don't think it's just a problem with comic book movies.

It's because 80% of the writers in working there can't wrap their heads around the idea. Every time you see a pompous, bitchy female character (which frankly is quite alot), someone is trying to write a strong, intelligent one.

What is really sad is how poorly action films do financially with a female lead character... that's why the plug got pulled on the Wonder Woman film

Also I imagine because no writer could make her story NOT sound ludicrous.

But yeah, I shudder at the thought of a movie WW. Trouble is, no one knows how to define femeninity at this point. Despite years of effort, Americans are not yet comfortable with any kind of gender identity.

I think Potts worked so  well because she's not defined primarily by her gender, but by her function and relationships, the rest of her character growing from there.

Oh, i have a pretty good idea of where they pulled that movie from.

By the way, just how many female super-heros are there anyway? I mean, big name superheros that have their own titles, characters that non-comic book nerds would recognize... not like The Wasp or someone. Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Tank Girl, Elektra, and Supergirl all had their own movies, and any other big-name female heros have been played pretty well as part of an on-screen team. If you want to prop up some second tier comic book super hero just because she's female, it feels like some nerdy form of affirmative action to me~

I'd like to see She-Hulk pop up in a movie to take care of superhero lawsuits. :^)

Tripe

Oooh yeah, let's have a She Hulk movie now!!!!

Hmm that was a little too enthusiastic wasn't it? :)

Actually, there seems to be a Witchblade film in the works, which I'm just stupid enough to be optimistic about. 'Course, the heavy Tn'A aspect that was the entire point in the begining, and a continued theme now, even as the characters have evolved, threatens to overwhelm any potential movie.

But in comics in general, females are problematic. There are a few strong females in DC comics, but Marvel's females either go insane/get mindraped, are severely unlikable, are completely forgettable, or have stupid ass names. SHE HULK? NAMORITA?!
The only strong, stable females in Marvel are Storm and Invisible Woman, and our hopes for seeing them done justice in film have more or less been blown away in the breeze, as they've been played by the only black woman Hollywood's not afraid of and a woman who's apeal is in having a toddler's voice and face with a model's body.

Bet you were popular in that theater.   :P

Kzinistzerg

We wouldn't have in an actual theater; it was shown at my college's movie night, which was not too popular that night, so the gymnasium used was rather sparsely populated.

Howard wasn't that memorable anyways. It probably won't affect the film at all.

I thought Howard did a good job, and he's definitely a guy who needs more high-profile projects (he's got the potential, that's for sure).

On the other hand, I am a member of the "Where the hell is Don Cheadle's Oscar?!" club (in no way associated with the "Give Don Cheadle an Oscar every year" club), so I'm all for his addition into pretty much anything.

I'm TripeHoundRedux and I approve this casting.

Don Cheadle is, well, The Don.

How do you not love Don Cheadle.  And it is sick that he hasn't gotten an Oscar - although when you see what it does to some people's careers....

It's just a shame that he's playing "second banana" (get Gwen Stefani in here) again in a major motion picture.

Any superhero out there he could play?
