No, no, you're supposed to take on a surly sarcastic additude and point out how unreasonable it is to expect someone to look 3 pages back to find a thread they're not sure exsists! YOU'RE RUINING IT FOR ME!

Okay, so, here's the thing:
BLEGH BLEGH
                         Lois Lane                                                                                              Rachel Dawes
AAUUUGGHHH Hot, but BLEGH
                     Mary Jane Watson                                                                                 Betty Ross

But now:

GWENETH PALTROW HAS BECOME THE ONLY FEMALE LOVE INTEREST IN A COMIC BOOK MOVIE THAT I'M GLAD WAS IN THE FILM! HOW DID THIS HAPPEN??!!! IT'S AN AFFRONT TO ALL THAT IS RIGHT!
The woman from "Emma" and "Duet" helped make a superhero movie better. I can't deal with this.

I have to agree. Kate Bosworth had to be worst person to ever play Lois Lane and while i think Batman Begins was good movie. Katie Holmes seemed to be the one thing trying suck the soul out of the movie and really was her character really needed that badly. As for Kirsten Dunst, well i think there was someone who could have done the job better. Also what kind of director hires a Blonde to play Red Head and a red head to play a blonde (Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy). As for Jennifer Connelly, well i usually fall asleep before i can get all the way through the Hulk. but i agree that Gwyneth Paltrow actually added something to the movie instead of just being annoying. End of Rant

Agreed.  But who do you think could have played MJ better since you mentioned it?  Unless you meant Bryce.
A spell was cast and the sky turned red.  The Angel's heart froze to ice.  Roses of blood from an innocent soul.  On the plain lies an Angel dead.

Tripe

Yeah Bryce should have played her all along. Because as gorgeous as Alicia is, I don't see her as MJ.

Jennifer Jason Leigh would've made a brilliant Lois Lane, 10 years ago.

Tripe

I still think Parker Posey would have been better cast as Lois.

Overall, I don't get why modern comic book movies feel the need to make the female leads so inert. What the hell is wrong with spunk?

She'd be great too, though I think she's a little too old for Singer's version, where they all seem younger than the Smallville cast...

Hollywood in general seems to have a problem with strong, intelligent female characters.  I certainly don't think it's just a problem with comic book movies.

It becomes more of a problem with Comic Book Movies simply because these females have been established as strong and intelligent, and the filmmakers just flush all that in favor of... well, with Jessica Alba as Sue Storm, it was so they could have the hottest actress in Hollywood at the time in their movie, but with the DC ladies, I dunno. What's their appeal?

You make a good point, but again I think Hollywood as a whole has the belief that all they need to do is cast the youngest, hottest actress they can so they don't have to spend time developing a character.  One of the many reasons I liked IM was that it was nice to see a superhero movie cast where I don't have to worry that their nemesis in the sequel will be puberty.

It's because 80% of the writers in working there can't wrap their heads around the idea. Every time you see a pompous, bitchy female character (which frankly is quite alot), someone is trying to write a strong, intelligent one.

That's because they WERE mostly younger than the cast of Smallville.  :b

Female characters tend to sffer the most in big Hollywood movies. The scripts are generally written by guys, the main character is a guy and he gets to do all the cool stuff. Then, it comes down to, "crap, we need to give her something to do", and invariably it is either irrelevant to the plot, or worse, just to create problems/mistakes that put the rest in peril so the movie can be padded out for a few more minutes. See Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow for by far the worst example I have ever seen.
Good, well written female characters are few and far between. Which is why I actually liked a lot of Queen Amidala in Phantom Menace because (despite her circus clown inspired wardrobe) she actually led people in battle capably, asked for help when she needed it, and WAS GRATEFUL FOR HELP WHEN SHE GOT IT. Her daughter Leia could have definitely used that last trait.
