Lotta fourth wall breaking and ridiculous improbabilities and randomness.

Yeah, it's almost like it was a Muppet movie or something! :P

I've already seen it twice. I'm trying to build up an immunity so I can listen to "Pictures In My Head" without sobbing.

I've never seen any Muppets things before (except the animated Muppet Babies series from the 80s), so I didn't have any frame of reference or know what to expect.

Even Muppet Babies broke the fourthwall, but maybe at the time you saw it you weren't really aware of the fourthwall :P

Anyway, you are really lucky! You have the opportunity to watch a whole lot of amazing Muppet stuff for the first time!

This movie is more a love letter to the original show and earliest movies. If you liked it at all, I would defintely recommend watching the first movie and The Muppet Show as you will probably like them even more.

I'm just gonna re-post what I wrote on a Muppet forum:

"I liked this movie, I'd say it's better than Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppets From Space, but not quite as good as the Muppet Movie.

Some things: as popular as Gonzo and Rizzo were in the 90's, I kinda wish they'd had more screen time. (Was Rizzo in the movie at all? I saw some Muppet Rats, but they weren't onscreen long enough to tell if any of them was Rizzo.) Ditto for Pepe. Though it's nice that he did get some screen time.

The music and the song-and-dance numbers were very Flight Of The Conchords-y, though that's not too surprising given James Bobin and Bret McKenzie's involvement. I kinda wish Bret and/or Jemaine Clement had had cameos in the film. But hey, if they do a Muppet Show revival, maybe they can have Flight Of The Conchords as the guest(s)."

Also, how would everyone here rank the Muppet movies?  For me, in order from favorite to least favorite:

1. The Muppet Movie
2. The Great Muppet Caper and Muppet Treasure Island
3. The Muppets
4. The Muppet Christmas Carol
5. Muppets From Space

CROW:  (Sinisterly) The Secret Government Eggo Project...
--Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie

"Jason, Chess is a game of chance."
-- My friend Shawn to my friend Jason upon being defeated at a game of Chess.

Same here. Sure, The Muppets (2011) delivered what it promised, but it wasn't nearly as satisfying as the earlier Muppet films, especially The Muppet Movie. It isn't charmless, but it's missing the charm that made the earlier films memorable.

Oh, by the way, did anyone notice the multicultural Pleasantville opening?

Where is Muppets Take Manhattan on your list? That is my least favorite of the Jim Henson period trilogy (mainly because I don't give a shit about Broadway).

Rats!  I thought I missed one.

Okay, revised list:

1. The Muppet Movie
2. The Great Muppet Caper and Muppet Treasure Island
3. The Muppets
4. The Muppets Take Manhattan
5. The Muppet Christmas Carol
6. Muppets From Space

Yeah, Muppets Take Manhattan is my least favorite one from the Jim Henson era too.  I used to like it a lot when I was a kid, but that was before I saw the Great Muppet Caper, or was even aware it existed.  What puts it ahead of the Muppet Christmas Carol is that it has much better music.  "Saying Goodbye" can still bring a tear to my eye.

I adored it. It ranks up there with the Jim Henson movies, but for me it REALLY shone in the second half, which was kind of like an hour long episode of the Muppet Show, which thrilled me to death. There's a really neat 80's comedy vibe coming out of the movie too. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Well if you never saw old muppets, I'll go ahead and post my favorite bit from the old show.

It is a lovely song. Although it really isn't about what the characters are going through. Jason Segal's character is a human, has always been a human, knows he's human, and is just there to support his brother. He just needs to grow up and concentrate more on his relationship with Amy Adams. So he needs to grow up and be a man, but being a muppet was never an option. Walter is a muppet, knows he is a muppet, and just needs to embrace that so he can grow up and be a part of the Muppet Show. He's not a man, and he knows this, so that isn't the conflict. He needs to mature, yes, but the alternative for him is not being a man. Still, great song.

I am not sure i agree.  He was clearly raised as a man.  He never embraced the fact he was a muppet until kermit put the idea into his head.  Not once.  And the phrase muppet of a man hints to me of something more than a total literal reading of meaning.

I dunno.  It wasn't bad, but the silliness and the constant fourth wall breaking got old after a while.  I just wanted them to stop and be serious and normal, if just for a minute or two.
