Then... I'm actually not sure what movie you saw. I recall very little by way of shaky cam in that movie, and definitely no lighting problems.

That movie works wonders for me for reasons I illustrated waaaay back in this thread, so should I ever get around to reading the book I feel like I'll be disappointed because of it. It's one of my all-time faves, quite simply.

For various reasons, this belongs on the list.  The box-office alone makes it a film that belongs on the list because so many people have seen it it is a part of the culture now.

The technical ones are obvious (I would think, at least: photorealistic fully-computer animated characters as the main characters of the story; motion-capture of virtually ;) the whole film with special camera rigs to catch facial expression for the animators to use for animating each sequence), the '3D effect' may be obvious to anyone who saw it in 3D.

From what I've been able to tell, those who are especially enamored of this film often love it because they connect with the spiritual aspects, more than the 'action flick' aspect, or, for that matter, any proficiency of Mr. Cameron for smooth or original dialog [though I had no problems with either when I've seen it].

[I personally really like it for the spiritual, emotional, and the action flick aspects, and any limitations others have noticed in dialog simply don't register for me when I'm watching it.]

Going to be a really close one by the looks of it!

I nominate City of God

Sorry (if that offended you that is).  It was Starman! who nominated it originally.  [I changed the original post, and the quote in this one to eliminate your name, just in case.  You can delete it from yours if you wish, or not, whatever.]

[It was The Avengers that you nominated that seemed to get roughly the same shit from others, and I got them confused because of the responses.  And that's another film I will likely renominate if you don't... for some of the reasons that I put for Avatar (with the exception of the 'spiritual part'... I'm not Norse, so seeing Thor and Loki didn't do as much for me as it might have for others ;) ).]

Children of Men's catching up, which warms my heart. TCM and Princess Bride got my other votes, they're both pretty essential when it comes to modern pop culture.

For the next round, I'm going to go with something I actually just watched: Fish Story. A Japanese movie about a comet that's about the crash into the world in 2012, and the nearly-unknown 1974 punk rock group who's song Fish Story is going to be the thing that saves the world. It's weird, but also considerably more grounded than you're all thinking right now, and is a rather funny and uplifting story about confronting fears and what sort of impact the right attitude can have on the big picture.

Seriously, it's an excellent movie that deserves a ton of love. It's also on Netflix Instant right now, so those of you who can... get on it.

I've been wanting to see that since they were talking about it on Filmspotting SVU.  Now I'll definitely check it out.

I liked this movie a lot, too, but I think it deserves a spot in the top 100 not because I liked it but for the tracking shot in the middle of it. It really is amazing. At least twenty minutes, I think -- all one shot, all one take. No editing at all.

Well i was only able to get through the first half hour when it first came to DvD so I don't remember much except that I could not finish it and I thought it was badly shot.

Thought I had missed a lot of shit in this thread over Avatar but looking back I don't see any, one post that said "ballsy" and that's it (other than a follow up joke post).  So you are getting worked up over nothing.  And the only complaint I remember about The Avengers was that is was too new, will people still think it's as great in a year?  Maybe, maybe not...

Oh, and could some more people please vote for Princess Bride or Chainsaw Massacre, I can't stand Michael Moore.  Him and Bill Maher are 2 that even when I'm agreeing with them I want to punch them, hard...

Relaxing Dragon

Much as I hate to get in to such a particular matter, yeah, not a fan of Mr. Moore here. Shoot, I'm on his side of the political fence and he still drives me nuts (just so bloody smug...).

I'd like to nominate a Werner Herzog documentary but I'm not familiar with all of them. Grizzly Man is probably his most well-known work, but I don't know if it's his best.

Would a Ken Burns film count?  I mean i know they are on Tv most of the time but sometimes they get shown in local theaters too.

Have you seen Cave Of Forgotten Dreams yet?  That's pretty amazing, but more for the cave itself than the stuff Herzog does. He does throw in some of his trademark craziness, but not a lot.  It's amazing in 2D but really amazing in 3D since the drawings often take advantage of the shape of the cave walls.  Only a few scientists a year are permitted in the cave so his 3D film is the only way most people are ever going to see it and feel like you are inside it.

If Ken Burn films can be counted I would like to nominate The Civil War.
