That's what I figured, but I can never be sure.

I dunno man, I thought they were pretty genius myself. *cough*

Isaac's sense of humor is evolved far beyond our ken. We mortals shall never fathom it, but merely bask in its shining example.

Yes, after reading Sir Issac's words, I can now truly see that 1967 Casino Royale is a masterpiece....I mean so what if Peter Sellers was ashamed of it, so what if David Niven hated the thing, so what if the film HAD NOTHING TO DO with the Ian Fleming book.

We should be so enlightened as Issac as to what is funny.

The 1967 spoof is excellent - great classic comedy. What's not to like about it? And it was clearly one of the inspirations for Austin Powers. 8)

The reason they did a spoof was that the producers thought they had the rights to the book, but, as it turned out, they only had the rights to the title. So, they did it as a comedy instead. Great film. 8)

Casino Royale.......the Woody Allen and David Niven film was an incoherant mess.  I am not the only one who believes that either.

I can back that up, having once rented it.  I was only able to make it through about 20 minutes of it before it got too bloated and excessively 60's-ish for the sake of being 60's-ish.  I mean, there were something like six directors for this mess.  I didn't know that they didn't have the rights to anything besides the title.  It certainly does explain a lot.  It sure as hell doesn't justify it, though.
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

None of these things mean anything. The fact is that Casino Royale is a very funny movie no matter what the circumstances behind it. Lots of actors hate things that they were involved with. That doesn't mean that, in every instance, those films aren't any good. That would be ludicrous.

So what? It's STILL FUNNY.

So, because it's dated, that means it isn't any good? Thank you for having such a high-class taste in cinema that you can tell the rest of us not to like something because it's "dated!" I guess we should all throw away our copies of The Gold Rush, King Kong, Casablanca, Dr. Strangelove, and countless of other movies made before 2006, because they're 'DATED!" and they have no place in our advanced society. Let's burn copies of 1984, because Orwell's predictions of the year 1984 were completely wrong, let's shred every print of Stanley Kubrick's 2001 because the actual year 2001 was nothing like the film! Let's NEVER READ SHAKESPEARE AGAIN, since Bill's writing is so INCREDIBLY DATED!!!!!! ::)

I don't judge a film based on the era it was made in. If I did, I wouldn't like any films at all. I can live with the fact that these films aren't from our era and move on. Just take them as period pieces, set in whatever year they were made in. If you want to enjoy good movies, you can't be turned off by the fact that they were made in 1967.

Arguing over what is and is not funny is like arguing over what's the best color. Get over it.

For what it is worth, I liked the 60's Casino Royale.   It is what it is, bloated, odd, campy, but fun.   Heck, I even like the music from it.

I enjoy it too. It manages to be funny in spite of itself - more Batman & Robin, Plan 9 funny.

I like bad movies as much as anyone else, but I found Plan 9 to be unwatchable without the Mike Nelson commentary. I really don't understand how people can "enjoy" its crappyness on the same level as a Batman and Robin?

For me, the joy of the movie is how serious it takes itself and how funny the results turn out to be.   It was made on a shoe string budget and the results show it.

Batman and Robin was a bloated piece of crap that costs a bundle made by folks who had to know how horrible it was while filming it.

Yup. Ed Wood's wide-eyed enthusiasm for making movies in spite of any obstacle shows through in Plan 9 and Bride Of The Monster and I love them for it.
