Sam Bradford out for season
Updated: August 24, 2014, 4:17 PM ET

St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is out for the 2014 season after an MRI disclosed he tore the ACL in his left knee in Saturday night's preseason game against the Browns, according to multiple sources.

Tough To Replace... Again

Sam Bradford was arguably having the best season of his career before tearing the ACL in his left knee last season during Week 7. The Rams will again have to adjust to life without Bradford this season, as he tore the same ACL Saturday night.

It is the same injury that sidelined Bradford in the middle of last season.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher is expected to confirm the news at his 5 p.m. CT news conference after meeting with his staff.

Bradford took what appeared to be a light hit from Cleveland's Armonty Bryant as he threw incomplete to tight end Jared Cook. Bradford shrugged Bryant off, but the defensive lineman made contact with the quarterback's left knee.

Bradford fell to the ground in pain as Rams doctors and trainers rushed to his side. He limped off the field under his own power but favoring the left leg as he went to the locker room for further examination.

Veteran Shaun Hill replaced Bradford, going 2 of 6 for 45 yards.

Bradford was making his second start of the preseason after returning from a season-ending torn left ACL suffered against Carolina on Oct. 20, 2013. Bradford went 4 of 9 for 77 yards before leaving.

Hey, that is what back up QBs are for.  Unless your last name is Manning, they play.

I can see them looking to add some QB as the new back up, but that is football.

They were planning on running a lot this year anyway.

I do remember when Trent Green got hurt the same way in 1999 and there was some indoor football and NFL Europe guy as the back up.....that went pretty well.

Who knows?

Bradford must be feeling bad about all this as he declined extending his contract for 2015, so the Rams will clear the salary cap space and move on.

Oh great and this just came across the wire.. :o
QuoteCarolina Panthers: Ron Rivera says Cam Newton has a hairline fracture in one of his ribs. Newton won't play vs. Steelers. Rivera thinks he'll be ready for Week 1.
Our backup, Mr. Anderson seems to have done better than Cam during the preseason anyway 8)

QuoteSevere penalties for domestic violence

Aug 28, 2014
espnW.com

The NFL is immediately implementing a sweeping domestic violence initiative that calls for a six-game suspension for a first offense and a lifetime ban from the league for a second offense.

The harsh measures, announced in a letter from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to all team owners, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, apply to all NFL personnel. A six-game suspension would come without pay and the length of the penalty could increase in the cases of a prior incident involving an employee before joining the NFL, or violence involving a weapon, choking, repeated striking, or when the act is committed against a pregnant woman or in the presence of a child.

A second-time offender may petition for reinstatement after one year but there is no assurance that the petition will be granted, the letter said.

The measures are due in part to widespread criticism Goodell received for his handling of discipline for Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, who received a two-game suspension in July for assaulting his then-fiancee. Viewed as a soft penalty, Goodell left many with the impression that the NFL did not understand domestic violence or take it seriously as a crime.

Goodell acknowledged as much in the letter.

"At times, however, and despite our best efforts, we fall short of our goals," Goodell wrote. "We clearly did so in response to a recent incident of domestic violence. ... My disciplinary decision led the public to question our sincerity, our commitment, and whether we understood the toll that domestic violence inflicts on so many families. I take responsibility both for the decision and for ensuring that our actions in the future properly reflect our values.

"I didn't get it right.

"Our personal conduct policy has long made clear that domestic violence and sexual assault are unacceptable. We clearly must do a better job of addressing these incidents in the NFL. And we will."

"Among the circumstances that would merit a more severe penalty would be a prior incident before joining the NFL, or violence involving a weapon, choking, repeated striking, or when the act is committed against a pregnant woman or in the presence of a child," the letter read. "A second offense will result in banishment from the NFL."

In February, Rice was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault after knocking out his girlfriend in an elevator in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Surveillance video showed Rice dragging then-girlfriend Janay Palmer, who appeared unconscious, out of the elevator. Unreleased video showed Rice striking Palmer in the elevator.

In July, Goodell announced that Rice would be suspended for the first two games of the regular season. There was deep and sustained criticism from fans and groups who work with victims of domestic violence in response. The number of games was less than the suspensions given for most other infractions, such as substance abuse, steroid use or DUI offenses. The penalty for those items is determined by the collective bargaining agreement hammered out with the players' union in 2011.

Domestic violence infractions, however, fall under the personal conduct policy, which meant that Goodell alone was able to determine the severity of any fine or suspension. The fact that the Ravens held a press conference with Rice in May and had Janay sitting next to him on the dais also seemed to imply she shared responsibility -- whether or not that was the intention.

The fact that Goodell reportedly allowed Janay Rice into the hearing to plead for leniency in front of her husband's employers struck many as inappropriate.

"Having done this work for many years, often a victim will say she doesn't want the abuser punished," said Judy Kluger, a former New York City judge and current executive director of Sanctuary for Families, after the decision was announced. "That shouldn't deter what an independent organization decides to do."

And one guy just got two games.....huh.....

Buffalo Bills are signing QB Kyle Orton

EJ Manuel could face competition at quarterback in Buffalo after all.

The Buffalo Bills are signing free-agent quarterback Kyle Orton, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday, per a source informed of the deal.

The journeyman quarterback was last with the Dallas Cowboys, who released him after he threatened to retire all offseason. There was always a sense Orton just wanted off the team, and this signing proves it.

Orton seems much older than 31 years old because he's started for so many teams: Chicago, Denver, Kansas City and Dallas. He's not going to save any franchise, but he could be a competent alternative to Manuel once he gets up to speed on Doug Marrone's offense.

The Bills started the offseason saying that they were open to any option at quarterback, but they wound up not truly challenging Manuel, their second-year starter. Thad Lewis, Jordan Palmer and Jeff Tuel have taken cracks behind Manuel this offseason. Only Tuel remains on the team.

Manuel, meanwhile, had perhaps the most discouraging preseason of any young quarterback in the league. We doubt Orton would have returned to the league without a good salary, and he knows that there's a chance he'll wind up starting games in Buffalo.

These are desperate times at quarterback in Buffalo, and this move has a strong whiff of desperation.

THEY'RE NOT MOVING TO TORONTO, DAMMIT (because it sounds more and more that Ralphie instructed his trust to sell to a local owner)

The funny thing is that as the Bills are constructed... a mediocre QB might be good enough for a wild-card berth takes long drag off of joint

Orton's just mediocre enough to pull it off!

Now if we can just get a spoof of him as a Bill :D :D

Another wide receiver ???
Cam's throwing accuracy seems to be the issue IMO :-\

Stephen Hill working out for Carolina Panthers

NFL

    Updated: Sept. 1, 2014 at 01:55 p.m.

While Cam Newton went through practice in what was described as a "beefed up flak jacket," the Carolina Panthers are exploring the possibility of adding another receiving option for their quarterback.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports former New York Jets wide receiver Stephen Hill is working out for Carolina on Monday, per a source informed of the plans. ESPN's Adam Caplan had the first report.

Hill was released by the Jets on Saturday after a disappointing two-year stint at the Meadowlands. Hill passed through waivers without being claimed, a somewhat surprising development for a 23-year-old former second-round pick with size (6-foot-4) and speed (4.36 40-yard dash time in the 2012 combine).

Hill's agent blamed the Jets' scheme and personnel for the wideout's lack of production, which amounted to just 45 receptions for 594 yards and four touchdowns over 23 games. That should be reason for suspicion in Carolina's front office, but Hill could help a Panthers receiving group dangerously low on speed and experience.

If Hill doesn't fall on his face in his workout, this is a partnership that makes sense.

Ray McDonald of San Francisco 49ers arrested on domestic violence charges

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald has been arrested on domestic violence charges.
The 49ers' defense was already suffering from attrition before Ray McDonald's arrest on domestic violence charges, Paul Gutierrez writes. Story

San Jose police Sgt. Heather Randol confirmed that McDonald, 29, was taken into custody early Sunday after officers responded to a call at 2:48 a.m. PT.

McDonald was jailed on felony domestic violence charges and was in the custody of the Santa Clara Sheriff's Department before posting bail Sunday afternoon.

He wouldn't discuss what happened with television news reporters who approached him after he posted bail.

"I can't say too much, not right now, but the truth will come out. Everybody knows the kind of person that I am," McDonald said. "I'm a good-hearted person."

Niners general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement Sunday that the team takes "such matters seriously," but is not commenting on the allegations involving McDonald without more information.

Among 49ers' defensive ends since Jim Harbaugh took the helm in 2011, Ray McDonald only trails Justin Smith in snaps, tackles and sacks.

An NFL spokesman told ABC News that the league is aware of McDonald's arrest and is "looking into the matter."
The incident occurred on Bentley Ridge Drive, part of an upscale San Jose neighborhood. It is the same street where McDonald's teammate, star pass rusher Aldon Smith, was arrested for DUI following a single-car accident last September. Smith has been suspended nine games for multiple off-field incidents.

McDonald also has an arrest for DUI on his record in Santa Clara County in 2010.
Sunday's incident occurred less than three days after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced tougher penalties for players accused of domestic violence. Under the league's newly implemented personal conduct policy, a first domestic-violence offense will result in a six-game ban and a second in a lifetime ban from the NFL.

The new rules were announced Thursday in the wake of Goodell being widely criticized for giving Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice a two-game suspension for allegedly hitting the woman who is now his wife, knocking her unconscious.

Ray McDonald was arrested on felony domestic violence charges less than three days after the NFL announced revisions to its personal conduct policy.
Goodell told teams to distribute to all players a memo in which he writes: "Domestic violence and sexual assault are wrong. They are illegal. They are never acceptable and have no place in the NFL under any circumstances."

Former 49ers safety Donte Whitner, who now is with the Cleveland Browns, told the Sacramento Bee last year that San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh told his team that violence against women would not be tolerated.

"He said that we can do anything in the world and we can come and talk to him and he'll forgive us except put our hands on women," Whitner told the Bee. "If you put your hand on a woman, then you're done in his book."

A third-round draft selection in 2007, McDonald has spent his entire career with the 49ers, recording 16.5 sacks in 101 games over parts of seven seasons. The 290-pound McDonald has started 45 regular-season games since Harbaugh began his tenure with the Niners in 2011.

Oh boy.. Owners seem to get off light..
QuoteThe NFL on Tuesday suspended Jim Irsay for six games and fined him $500,000 after the Indianapolis Colts owner pleaded guilty earlier in the day to one misdemeanor count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The suspension takes effect at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

Irsay will be eligible to return after the Colts' game against the Texans on Oct. 9.
