the questioning seems more like rationalizing to me, since a book can't change and information can (for example, the research that is close to proving homosexuality is not a choice, as most of us have known for years).  I can't help but think if it's the same information and yet the people next door are taking different parts different ways or the leaders of the church say this part now means this, I'd be asking some questions.

what ever happened to just plain old confusion?  No one thinks thats a part?  That some people might just confused as the topics covered in the bible are hardly light or easy to understand matters at all.

ScottotD

2000 years(or so) isn't enough time to figure it out?

hows that string theory coming along?  Has science managed to convince every idiot on the face of the earth that INDEED the earth orbits the sun and the damned planet is flat?

ScottotD

I do think actual research should probably take longer than interpreting text and even then they've had a massive head start on modern science.

my point was that even in the face of overwhelming obvious evidence you still cant stop idiots from beleiving dumb things in science,  why would you assume those same idiots are any smarter in their religions?

ScottotD

Because science by it's very nature changes, a book is just a book.

Quicksilver I'm agnostic, atheism is just as silly as fundamentalism. To be atheist, you must believe nothing bigger exists, so essentially you think you're the center of the universe.

Oh, please. How is lacking a personal belief in a god or gods as "silly" as wanting to force unproven beliefs on others? And your assertion that atheists believe that they are the center of the universe is just stupid. Saying "I don't believe that a god exists" does not lead to that and you know it.

Ok, As I always remember atheism as being, one who doesnt not believe in a higher power. Now what I'm saying is how can you not believe in anything bigger than us? That's what I'm getting at. I'm not saying you not believing god is silly. I'm saying not believing that something out there in the reaches of the universe is bigger than us. Bigger is kind of a figurative thing, but I mean it as something that could disprove god or prove him, or have absolutely nothing to do with the notion but points to a grander vision of the universe. Like different dimensions, scales, aliens, well lots of things we cannot comprehend. To throw that out, would seem silly to me. Maybe you dont believe were the only thing in the universe and that something is out there, but that's what I came to believe atheism to be. Mind you I used to call myself an atheist, but I kind of changed my title so to speak, because I do believe in something.

I have faith that there's something out there. Basically, maybe it's god maybe not, I dont really care, because it has to be faith on some level. I have faith that there isnt a brick wall out in space somewhere. Not that a brick wall out in space would lead one to say, well who built the damn wall and what's on the other side. I've spent far to many nights of my youth debating this argument on supposed illicit substances to drop this altogether. :)

btw what the hell is hitler doing in this thread? he was an idiot and insane. The Arian race is fictitious, not to mention you dont hurry along evolution by killing people in ovens, he was just a sick fuck, plain and simple.

Mind you, I'll most likely have to dig to find this reply again as I'll be gone for about 8 hours, this is a lively one again. I'll tell you where we end.....a circle
The Ood: The Beast and his armies will rise from the pit to make war against God.
Rose: I'm sorry?
The Ood: Apologies. I said: I hope you enjoy your meal.

Perhaps they just realize the fruitlessness of the discussion, nobody on either side is likely to be convinced their take is wrong... or did you just want to make fun of people without having to worry about them replying?

I repeat, I just thought the movie was stupid.  That was my whole initial point.

Not at all... I want everyone to have their say.  At no point did I tell anyone that they were not allowed to respond to mine or anyone else's post.

HOWEVER, I can't be held responsible when people give up, and take their ball and go home.

Ultimately, if anyone was truly concerned about the "fruitlessness of the discussion", they wouldn't post in the first place.  No one in either camp is going to gain any ground, it's mostly just a sounding board for people to state theirs beliefs.

sarcasm_made_Easy: I'm glad someone got the point I was making by "going for the jugular"

sarcasm_made_Easy

i do beleive the conversation ought to be civil though even if you have ABSOLUTELY no real respect for said position.  and personally i did think your post was a tad harsh man.  but eh whatever.

I think only one two people at most have gone "home"

What the...? Please point out anywhere that defines Athiest as a person who believes they are the pinacle of existance. Athiest simply means you doen't believe in any deities, that's it. Anything else you think that means is your own baggage.
