I dislike James Franco intensely, he's probably my least favorite actor in both Spiderman movies to date.

Why'd they have to kill off the goblin who was interesting?

To be fair, you're pretty much supposed to hate Harry, so I guess it's working.

Well, they pretty much recreated Norman's death for Amazing Spider-Man #122:

Yeah, I know it's canonical (although green goblin senior got resurrected.) I just wish they could have kept the interesting actor instead of the annoying teenage angst-mo-tron

Yeah, I get you, but if you can't take teenage angst, Spider-Man is just not for you. ;) Ever try reading a whole run of classic Spidey comics? It's like having Dashboard Confessional downloaded into your brain Matrix-style.

I don't think I've ever read a comic book from before the 70s, and even that was just a few Batmans and Miller's Daredevil run. Old comics really kinda were for children.

Comics from the '40s, yes, but by the '60s I'd say that Marvel comics definitely were intended for teens at the youngest, thus Peter Parker's girl problems, the teenage X-Men, etc. I wouldn't say this is for children:

Yeah, end of the silver age, right there.

Even so, the dialog left a lot to be desired, and I'm not much on the four color style.

Yeah, it's not the best comics has to offer, but you can clearly see the beginnings of adult storytelling. And in the next issue, Spider-Man totally kills the Green Goblin. Superman would not approve.

Absolutely. For example, Wonder Woman was nothing but child-like innocence and harmless fun. No strange sexual, bondage related, undertones there. Nope. No horror comics either. That's just a myth dreamt up by Fredric Wertham.

Lots of children's stuff has creepy adult undertones, that doesn't make it any less oriented towards children.

Priest4hire

True, although it usually doesn't go quite as far as a woman tying other women up, dressing them in deer costumes, and chasing them though to woods only to tie them up again and serve them on a platter. Nor do they have Dr. William Marston's great quotes to back them up. ;)

But again this overlooks the rise of horror and crime comics prior to the whole CCA deal. Actually, it's a little more complex than it might seem. I'd bet you'd be hard pressed to provide real proof that every single comic writer in the 40's was deliberately targeting youths. It was probably more of a mix with a lot working within a style that was popular but at the same time just trying to do the best they could to tell stories they liked.

6079SmithW

Yeah, I meant superhero comics, although the fact that little kids were reading a lot of geniunely disturbing horror comics in the forties led to the whole comics code thing. And yeah, I was generalizing, I know about Will Eisner types who were doing good stuff even back then. Basically, I don't like Golden Age and most Silver Age stuff.
