Yeah, I didn't see Passion as being over the top at all. If you can watch Kill Bill and say it's "well-used" violence, then Passion's violence tain't no thang but a chickan wang...

Oh please let that mean "wing"... please let that mean "wing".  I wish not to think about a Rooster's special device.

Yeah. I don't recall Jesus spraying blood all over the place. I'm not sure people CAN spray blood all over the place unless they're shot in the head.

Not even then me thinks.  The only realistic blood spray I've seen is arterial spray... of course I've only seen that on hospital shows.

so you didn't think it was over the top?

Seeing as how Romans really did historically torture prisoners (and probably in a far more graphic way than was even in the movie), I can't rightly say it was over the top. Jesus was tortured, as is shown in the film, and he died on the cross, as is shown on the film. Nuff said. I suppose Schindler's List was also over the top in how it portrayed the holocaust? I didn't think so. In fact it was worse historically than any film has ever been able to portray. The crucifiction probably was too. I have yet to see any movie that includes the part where Jesus is naked on the cross (which he was).

As for it being anti-semetic, I must be the dumbest half-semetic person on the planet then because I detected no anti-semetic sympathies. Fact: Jesus was a Jew. Fact: Jesus did some stuff the Jews, as per their culture, considered to be criminal. Fact: The Jews turned him over to the Romans because the Romans enforced the law. Fact: The Romans tortured and crucified Jesus. If Jesus had been born in whatever Germany was at that time (Germania?), it would have been the Germans. If he'd been born in China, it would have been Chinese. If America existed and He was born here, it would have been the Americans! Are we to rewrite history because it's offensive to a certian group of people? What about the fact that He was meant to die on the cross? Why would anyone blame the Jews (and the Jews be so offended at being blamed) for murder when His death is the only thing that saves humanity and created a whole new religion?

People can think all they want and I respect anyone who saw this film and was everything besides moved by it, as a sidenote. It's just a movie, afterall. No one was obligated to be moved by it. If you were, you were. If you weren't, not the end of the world.

Very well said! But there was one film that showed Jesus naked on the cross, and that was the Martain Scorcese film "The Last Temptation of Christ" where Jesus is played by Wilhem Dafoe.

And has for the whole Jesus spraying blood thing when he was pierced with the Spear of Destiny. I wouldn't call it "suirting." It was definately nothing like in Kill Bill. Keep in mind, the wind was really blowing, so the blood kinda of fritzed a little bit.
I am Ambassador Phantom, from the planet Krankor! I am rapidly approaching your planet... in the warship, which you have just seen. I will arrive tomorrow night at precisely eight o'clock. At that time I shall make my wishes known to you. You will obey them... or die! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!

There's also basic science involved in that one. His muscles were dead and the surrounding air pressure would have realistically caused the "squirting/flowing" effect that the movie portrayed with him hanging in the position he was in. You know how poking a large hole in a water balloon causes the fluids within to spray out? yeah....

I thought KIll Bill was fun violence and this was boring violence.

I didn't feel Schindler's List was over the top and I'm not quite sure what parallel you're trying to make between the two.  The violence was only one element of the movie's 'problems' in my opinion, the soundtrack, the cheezy church set, the acting, the lighting, there was nothing in this movie that didn't feel constantly turned up to 11 and that made me laugh.  As I've previously stated, perhaps your beliefs and opinion that it's depicting true events means you can't or won't see it, or maybe it's just me.

The parallel I was drawing was the historical relevance of the violent content. By your stating that the movie was over the top, I naturally assumed you were referring to the violence/torture as that seems to be the one element everyone usually complains about.

And it is just you. But by that, I mean that art is subjective and one person's Lawrence of Arabia is another person's Manos. I know alot of Christians that didn't like Passion, actually. Doesn't mean anything is wrong with them. There's nothing wrong with you or anyone else that didn't like Passion. Just because I'm a Christian didn't mean I was supposed to automatically love the movie, and there's nothing wrong with any aetheists or Wiccans or Hindus or whoever who loved the movie despite not being Christian, either.

I would say that having Christian beliefs or a Christian background can make the movie more powerful. We all base our responses to movies to past experiences, opinions, ect whether we like it or not. But just because it's powerful to us won't make it powerful to everyone. If you thought the movie sucked, so be it. I respect that opinion.

I amazed at the level of civility in a thread like this....... bravo!

I did not see the film, I still will not. I'm just saying honestly, I thought of it as an exploitation movie. I know almost all movies are, but I could not bring myself to see a movie by mel gibson about such a sensitive topic. It also did look like a huge guilt trip. Feel like I didnt really need to see it, I'm sure what happened to him was horrible, but really didnt need to see it to believe it. I'll leave it at that, good debate though, read all 7 pages.

I agree it was a bit exploitative.  I remember when it came out my Christians friends, it seemed, used it as a badge of "Christian merit."  It's a movie for god's sake.  Why does going to the cinema suddenly mean you're a good Christian?

"You haven't seen passion? I've seen it 3 times and I cried!!"  "Oh yeah, I've seen it 5 times and I'm still crying."   It was like a "who's the bigger Christian" competition judged by how many times you padded Mel's pocketbook.

Like I said somewhere else, Jesus sells.

I'll probably be crucified for this, but there is much debate among actual scientists and scholars about how much, if any, of the New Testament "actually happened."

These are ancient myths (many borrowing from earlier myths) spawned in a harsh desert culture long ago and cobbled together centuries later by many different writers with many different agendas.

But a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest...

That discussion has been happening for a millenia now. Technically it's been happening since the dawning of the Christian Era.

The one great supernatural/divine action that happens in the New Testament that that portion of the Bible depends upon is the resurrection of Christ.

I would say many more supernatural/hard-to-believe occurances took place in the Old Testament. For example: Chariots of fire, floods that consumer the land, parting of seas, Samson knocking down a stone temple, ten plagues so forth etc....

There's a lot of evidence that people try to use to both prove and disprove the actual happenings of the Bible, but in the end, a people of faith should not need such proof. In other words, I don't believe in an empty tomb, I believe in the resurrection. See?

Anyway -- nobody's crucifying you on this board, friend =)

*Sigh* *Puts down nails and hammer*  I just put together the cross as well... it had a nice little embroidered rose on it, golden fringe, and a lovely satin head rest.  For an execution device, it was a marvelous work if I say so myself.  Does anyone have a neighbor then that they have no use for?
