I really hope it doesn't drop too much this weekend. This is a movie that should have legs. But that is so rare these days.

I wanna say it should, since there won't be much competition in R.I.P.D. or Turbo (both look dead in the water). But then I remembered that The Conjuring will probably do pretty well, so who can say.

KidFlash

There are four new releases next week, and buzz on The Conjuring is through the roof, so it's not looking good in the long run.

IMAX might be the saving grace of this domestically. Something in the range of $115-125m could be considered a win IF the film can clear $300m overseas.

now what are the odd this thing will  become a cult classic when it goes to dvd and blu ray.

I imagine this movie would make a fairly large DVD sale too........since that is what we Sci-Fi (and not SyFy) people do, buy DVDs to watch movies we like again.

I wonder how much they are planning on?  Surely someone has already done this estimate.

Watched it last night.  I'm 50/50 on it.  The characters are pretty hard to get invested in.  There's really nothing too them.  Which is a shame, because it feels like some of them have potential.  I see a lot more potential in the Australians relationship than anyone else, though really not a lot comes out of them either.  I also would have like to know more about the Russian and Chinese pilots, rather than just looking like action figures inside bigger action figures.  Really in terms of character there's very little.  The film did come alive with the scientists and Ron Perlman.  Yes, they were all basically paper thin live action cartoon characters, but at least they were characters.  I kind of wish the film was about them.  The dialogue was also largely pretty flat and declarative.  It's like the Robot Devil talking about Fry's play "You can't just have characters say what they are feeling.  THAT MAKES ME VERY ANGRY."

On the plus sides the monster fights are very good.  Even though the first fight was good, we were just found myself not caring about what I was seeing.  But the other ones worked better and you could tell what was going on most of the time.  They were really well co-ordinated and, despite being CGI, had a sense of weight and physicality to it.  There were also a few cool surprises in the film, which was nice.

I think this wouldn't have been a hard movie to fix to make it even stronger.  Just more character (they don't need to be complex, just interesting or fun to watch do things), more charismatic actors, maybe a greater sense of doom and inevitability (there were some great moments that implied that, like watching wall-workers watching another wall fall very easily) and I also would have liked a little more time outside of the shatterdome to get a sense of what the horror is really like (the flashback, despite being cheesy, did a really good job of showing what it is like to be small and impotent in the face of a monster).

I came home from the movie going "HNNNNNNNGGGGG YES" in the car which I think is a sure sign of me loving every minute of it.
