Thinking about it some more, I am so very glad this movie is, for want of a better term, simple. It's all for the greater good of showing giant robots fighting giant monsters. What time we spend with the humans is well done, and serves us enough to see this world, and care abut them. As much as I love the Godzilla movies and their ilk, there was always FAR too much time spent with the humans and always particularly with characters we didn't care about. Also, in a similar vein, this movie doesn't succumb to the downfalls of American Disaster Movies (particularly Emmerich) where we have so many characters that have to be introduced and explained why they have anything to do with the plot. Everyone here is part of the program to deal with this.
Also notable, given the clear Japanese monster movie influences, are the lack of annoying children in upsetting shorts* and useless annoying psychic chicks (a particular pet peeve of mine).

*Although there may have been one in whatever meeting the governments of the world decided on the whole "Let's make bigass robots to fight monsters hand to hand" plan. Seriously, the Jaeger program sounds like it was 'Bring your child to work Day' at the Top Secret Underground Military Council Bunker.

I will be throwing my money at them tonight for the 3D version......I am hoping no feisty grandmothers on the screen either.

I really enjoyed Charlie Day being Charlie Day.

I enjoyed this one......I did not really feel it was too long at all.

And they actually explained why they decided to build these robots rather than keep killing the monsters with normal weapons.   Just needed two sentences to do that.....well done.

Another thing I liked was the cast.  Other than Idris Elba, they usually play smaller parts, sidekicks or are on TV.  But they all worked in their parts.

Idris played it calm in the movie, which showed off his role and his attitude.  I think in everything he plays in (Luther, The Wire, etc.), he pretty much controls the screen when he is on, and that is a good thing.

The two guys that played the technical roles were pretty interesting.  The British guy who is on like every BBCA show was pretty facial and emotional, but he does that in EVERY role he is in, so that is fine.  The other guy reminded me of a shorter version of Eric McCormack from "The Perception".....but that is a good thing.  And the main four guys that controlled the robots all reminded me of Sean Bean from different ages of his career.  And of course, that is a good thing.

And besides the military explanation, they also explained how the creatures can survive on the face of the ocean and on land and not collapse due to the fact that the bottom of the ocean will not allow you to live there and on the top of the earth.

A sequel?  I hope not.  Just keep this one as it is.  Spare us from the terror of bad sequels like Aliens 3, Godfather 3, etc.

They did? Must have missed that. I didn't really mind, they are alien monsters genetically bred to do this job, after all. I just didn't notice an explanation for it.

I do agree with you about sequels. Dn't get me wrong, if anybody could do a good sequel to this, it would be Del Toro. But I'd rather see him spend his time on other things. And no, NOT Frankenstein.

I'm surprised no one's made this joke yet:

So when Raleigh piloted the mech with Mako did they do a Tokyo Drift?  :rimshot:

Now I understand why no one's made the joke yet.
