Guillermo Del Toro On What You Can And Can't Expect From The Pacific Rim DVD, Blu-Ray And Sequel
Quote from: Guillermo Del ToroThere was a line that I deleted from the movie that will come back if I do a second movie. Newt explained that the Kaiju are not carbon based organisms like humans, they are silicon based. The only part I left of his explanation is that they have a hive mentality, meaning that if you "drift" with a Kaiju brain, you are drifting with every Kaiju alive.

Depending on the duration of the drift the information might be complete or incomplete, but the Kaiju know everything the human drifts with them knows. That's as much as I can tell you without spoiling the sequel. Well, that's providing there is a sequel – if there isn't one, I promise, I'll spill the beans.

'Pacific Rim' Sequel In Planning Stages, Guillermo Del Toro Says
Quote from: DOMINIC PATTEN"We're been talking about the idea for it and working on a pitch," said Guillermo del Toro today about a Pacific Rim sequel. "And there will be a Mexican Jaeger," he joked about the giant robots that fight the giant Kaiju monsters in the movie, out July 12. This isn't the first time del Toro has floated a sequel to the upcoming monster adventure movie, but the director was more confident about where it would fit in the Legendary Pictures property's trajectory. "Having had two to three years pass from the first Pacific Rim to the second movie, we can also prepare a good video game, continue the graphic novel and continue the mythology," the director added. Del Toro wrote the script for the first Pacific Rim with Travis Beacham, who is writing the prequel graphic novel

As enthusiastic as del Toro was about another Pacific Rim movie at a media roundtable Tuesday, Legendary CEO Thomas Tull cautioned about getting too premature about sequel talk before the movie comes out. "We'd like to do it but it's up to the audience — ultimately we'll have to see how it does," Tull said.

'Pacific Rim 2'? Director Already Has 'A Couple Of Things' In Mind
Guillermo del Toro tells MTV News all the ideas he has for a potential follow-up.
Quote from: Josh Horowitz"Pacific Rim" is a rarity among this summer's blockbusters in that it's completely original, based solely on the imagination of its creators. But that also means that it has more work to do — especially if it's successful.

If it's a hit, audiences will likely demand a sequel. But given its monsters-versus-robots set-up, a follow-up doesn't sound too difficult to imagine. In fact, the film's co-writer and director Guillermo del Toro already has a few ideas for a follow-up, and when MTV News caught up with him, he detailed what exactly he has in mind.

"I'll tell you a couple of things. We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure," del Toro told MTV News, referring to one of the many giant robots that fight monsters. "We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure. Second thing is you're gonna see a merging of Kaiju and Jaeger. And that is quite special."

Following the adventures of human soldiers who pilot giant robots called jaegers to fight against undersea monsters called Kaiju, the film climaxes with an enormous showdown underwater as the last remaining robots fight to close a portal between our world and the one from which the monsters emerge. Del Toro said that if nothing else, this epic showdown produced a few promising ideas about how to further explore this larger-than-life world and push its mythology into new territory.

"Just think about it for a second," del Toro explained. "We sent Gipsy to the other side, right? It exploded, but whatever remains stays there." Referring to "drifting," the psychological process through which jaeger pilots team up with each other to maneuver their giant machines, he highlighted another plot point that might come into play in a sequel.

"We've drifted with a Kaiju brain," he observed ."Well, then start riffing on that and you'll get to something."

Just got back. Enjoyed it, but it was probably about 20 minutes too long. But one thing...

There was actually a scene in Pacific Rim that I had just seen two hours earlier... in Sharknado. I'm not joking. It's likely a huge coincidence, but nonetheless it was there.

Yeah, the reviews say it should've been about 90 minutes long, not 130.

I really didn't mind the run time, although how well you enjoy the characters will really determine that. The supporting cast is all outstanding (helps that I'm a big Charlie Day fan), but the main character is somewhat blank. Not a bad thing, ultimately, since he's got a clear and effective character arc (I know you love those), but put him in a scene with Idris Elba, and he just fades right into the background.

Got my tickets for the 3D version tomorrow night.  I hope 3D is worth it.

The 3d effects are quite well done. No 3d House of Pancakes stuff, just constant depth of field.

And just to give the haters some air time, here's something from Buzzfeed called "Positive Pacific Rim review or Negative Transformers Review?" by some weasel named Conor.

1. "Adjust expectations and enjoy the big, dumb brawl."
2. "Audiences are liable to be in a state of utter bewilderment."
3. "Why did this consummate labor of love have to be so dumb - so clunky and hollow and poorly-acted? Why does it feel so incomplete?"
4. "Who cares about silly things like logic and sharp dialogue"

   5. "A carnival of top-drawer special effects"
6. "knows what sort of film it wishes to be; it is that film, and much more."
7."Kids may just love this film. But for adults, there's not much of a story."

8."If I were nine years old, I would see [it] 50 times.

   9. "turns the volume up to 11 and the IQ to -1."
10."like going to one of those chain all-you-can-eat buffet restaurants: The potatoes may be overbaked, the green beans limp and the beef lukewarm, but no way are you walking out of there hungry."

11."Sensory overload is the order of the day, [it is] packing a punch with its bold and bright colour palette, sheer size and mega volume.
12. "No one presumes to apply artistic criteria to the sight of a high-rise being demolished."

13."The adult in me might wonder how beings from another universe don't blink out of existence entering one with entirely different cosmic constants... but, then the kid in me says to myself, "Shut up, brain! Giant robots"
14. "Big, dumb and loud in all the very best ways."
15."a big-budget, effects heavy, feature film version of a Saturday morning cartoon."
16."True, epic filmmaking, but its enormity actually undermines its cumulative impact"

17."No giant robots urinate on humans in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."
You'll have to actually give them a hit to get the answers. Nyah.

Just got back from seeing it. My brain haz esploded!

Predictable, cliched, goofy, over the top, and a B-Movie in every sense of the word, except they had a budget.

And I loved it.

KidFlash

Honestly, I find its earnest nature charming in a way that the Bayformers films probably couldn't pull together if they tried.

I'm reading a box-office thread at the moment, and it is seriously depressing me.

ManUnderMask

I'm really happy Del Toro didn't resort to the crappy quick cuts during fight scenes. It's so nice to be able to tell what's going on.
I survived the San Diego Comic Con 2010 Hall H stabbing.

You could tell what was going on better than most movies of this type, but I won't say it was ALWAYS clear. It was great that there was no shakycam (a trend that should die a horrible death), and no quick cuts. But the fights were usually all at night, and the monsters were all dark grey, the robots dark colors. And too much goddamn rain! I hate rain in fight scenes.

Mrs. Dick Courier

After hearing so much about it, thought it was just another low budget monster movie

Excellent cast!  Charlie Day?  Ron Perlman?  Charlie Hunnam?

May have to catch this after all.
Opticians are easy on the eyes

Darth Geek

I was surprised how much Charlie Day had to do in this. I just figured he'd be a side character with one or two scenes, tops. And the other scientist guy was hilarious. Very much reminded me of a character Jeffrey Combs would have played.

Rainbow Dash

Not going to be able to watch Godzilla Vs. Megalon again without thinking "They're pronouncing "Jaeger" wrong
