HAHA!! C'mon, Beenie, tell me you didn't like that picture!

I wasn't talking to you, silly...

As I choke to death from the laughter, will you cry for me?  LOL!!!  Very funny...

I don't get this term that all the critics are imposing on recent horror films..."torture porn"? I don't think that these films are romanticizing torture, rape, murder, etc., they're horror films! These elements are there to freak you out. If the scenes make you uneasy, then they're doing their job. It's okay if you don't like these movies, but referring to them as "torture porn" is going a bit too far. None of the so-called "torture porn" films have glamorized the violence they portray. I find their classification as "torture porn," "gorno," etc, to be utter nonsense. If you don't like them, you have a right to choose not to watch them. Nobody's forcing you to view them. These films exist for people who enjoy these kinds of horror movies. But they're not "torture porn."
This iRiff will only be on sale for another few hours. Get it while it's cheap!

I get where you're coming from Isaac and like you said, of course there is going to be violence in a horror movie. I guess I'd describe it more as walking a fine line between necessary violence and gratuitous violence.

Example 1: Saw 1 and 2 contain necessary violence where as Saw 3 contains gratuitous violence. Example 2: Cabin Fever contains necessary violence where as Hostel contains gratuitous violence. Etcetera, etcetera.

The point here is that the film makers get lazy and go back to what they "think" is what the audience wants, when in fact they've simply run out of good ideas for plot.

Yes they are.  The "porn" part of that classification denotes the explicitness in which the horror is shown.  People see these movies because of the extra violence shown in them, just as other people watch porn (and not soft-core) for the extra nudey parts.   I think there's even a comparability with some scenes in Hostel (I'm thinking of the scene where one of the main male characters is killed) and a porn scene: You have the foreplay (or minor mutilation), leading up to the orgasm (or the kill scene).  They both have a "climax"  which in and of itself satiates the viewer to his or her tastes.

I resent the fact that right-wing media outlets are acting like it's something new, although the vague 'could be bad but we don't really know how' threats are pretty funny.

I'd say it constitutes a trend,
I personally am a fan of plot driven horror movies so I'd call it  a concern on quality.

ScottotD

it was a trend in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's too.  Everyone made it out okay.

...

Yeah, this trend is nothing new... and i don't know of any "right-wing media" that's pretending it is.  ::)

Splatter, slasher and gore films have all been around for a long time. But the reason the term "torture porn" is being thrown around so much lately, is because many of these films have had major theatrical releases as opposed to lingering around on the underground video market. More so, the term actually refers to films that have explicit torture scenes, such as Hostle and Wolf Creek.

The "torture" part of these films should be obvious, and i think mrbasehart explained the correlation to pornography pretty well. I think it's actually a pretty acurate term for some of these films~

I've seen commercials for 'reports' on 60 Minutes and other current affairs shows.

oy!

lol just like saying/typing that

even still if you admit that your country is automatically further to the left than our why are you even bothering trying to differentiate between left and right media for something within our country?

Jubilee

That's it. I'm taking over this thread.

We're now talking about a DVD release for the made for TV film, Generation X, in which 13 year old Chinese-American girl, Jubilee, is played by a 31 year old Jewish woman from New Jersey.

I'm glad you all decided to see reason in this.

So, my thing is, "WHERE'S LYNDA!?"

Also, I almost peed.

The end.
