Relaxing Dragon

Man, I leave the internet for 5 hours and some kind of news asteroid manages to hit the geek world. I can hardly keep up these days.

Is it bad that I want George Lucas to die so that someone can reboot the prequels and finally do eps 7-9?

This actually sounds horrible.  I don't really wish that.....but now it's moot.

Tweet from Ken Jennings;

Disney if you don't release a new edit of Phantom Menace where Statler & Waldorf heckle the whole thing, you are leaving money on the table

Anyone else think Mike is hiding in a closet right now whimpering at the thought of more Star Wars that he'll be expected to riff?

I hope they don't ever try to reboot the series, or redo the prequels.  Something original set after the republic is rebuilt might have a chance at holding my interest.

I always thought the prequels were fundamentally flawed due to where they started, you are going into a story knowing the main character is going to turn evil, why would you start with him as a little kid?  So if they ever do a reboot, it would be way more interesting to concentrate on his downfall, starting with him as a young adult.  If you start with Anakin the same age as Luke when we first meet him, then the 2 trilogies could mirror each other.

And that story is pretty much what the Clone Wars animated series is all about. Anakin's story is told. Love it or hate it. Just deal with it. Unless Disney wants to go Old Republic, I'm done with the past. Time to move forward.

Fie on you bellyachers.

Star Wars is fine when Lucas isn't directing it. Seriously, watch the Clone Wars CGI series. The stories are good. Anakin is believable, and even occasionally scary. Padme - get this, freaking Padme - is interesting and sympathetic.

This proves - the same story in different hands is just fine.

Yeah, people keep saying that, but I watched the movie-length episode and I can never un-watch it.

Never seen any of the Clone Wars stuff, not all that interesting a setting really.

Lucas "sold out" long before this once he and his small company he made became itself a huge corporate studio.
As for Disney, as long as they can treat them as well as they have (so far) Marvel, I am okay with it.
I'm really just cautiously optimistic. We now have a chance of having a good director make a good Star Wars movie, something we haven't had a chance for in decades. If they fuck it up, it's on them. But if they get somebody really interesting, like Guillermo Del Toro maybe, we could have something great.

Thing is though, the first movie, the one you like the most, was the one made when he had the least control; the studio had a fairly hefty influence over how that movie was made compared to the prequels which, like them or hate them, cannot be argued to be more successful than the ones made when he didn't hold the reins alone.

Plus, he wasn't making any more movies before this, so just don't see the new ones and you're no worse off.

Me, I'm excited that there could potentially be good Star Wars films again, and right when my son is growing up!
