QuoteBritish actor Charlie Hunnam (FX's "Sons of Anarchy") is in negotiations to star in "Pacific Rim."

The story sees powerful extraterrestrial aliens threaten the Earth's existence, attacking cities and nations neighboring the Pacific Ocean. To meet the threat head-on, humanity develops giant robots to fight them off. The movie is influenced by mecha, the Japanese genre involving humans piloting robotic constructs.

The details of Hunnam's role are being kept secret although online details describe the character as a pilot of one of the mechas that needs to climb back into the driver's chair.

Del Toro turned to "Pacific Rim" when his long-gestating adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" fell apart over budgetary issues and rating. He recently directed the "Hellboy" sequel and "Pan's Labyrinth."

Hunnam's credits "Children of Men" and the title role in "Nicholas Nickleby."

Comic-Con 2011: Guillermo Del Toro Talks PACIFIC RIM; Says It'll Be 'The Finest F*cking Monsters Ever Committed to Screen'
Quote from: Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub
Legendary Films held their first ever Comic-Con panel today kicked off their inaugural run with aplomb, bringing out plenty of A-list talent and displaying concept art for four different projects.

The most anticipated of these films is likely Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim, a monsters versus robots yarn starring Charlie Day, Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba and written by Travis Beacham. Del Toro brought out his actors and his writer to discuss the project, which he promises will have:

Quote"The finest f*cking monsters ever committed to screen."
Pacific Rim is still very early in development so we didn't get to see any footage or even concept art for the monsters or robots, but we did get a peek at the film's title treatment, which is metallic red lined with gold and features more lens flairs than J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot.

We also saw an emblem, which is likely related to the robots. It's a gold circle with a giant eagle with wings outstretched underneath a five-pointed star. Underneath the eagle is a series of line that roughly make the shape of a lowercase "q" and a lowercase "p" intersecting with a capital "A".

"Only because I am barren, otherwise I would bare Legendary's child," said Del Toro as the panel opened. Before adding, "Applaud the balls, always applaud the balls."*

The film began life as an idea from screenwriter Beachman, who Del Toro was driving around town because the scribe did not own a car. "I realized a couple of years ago that my favorite movie of all time had not yet been made," Said Beachman. "And I look around at this team and I think we're making it."

The real appeal for Del Toro was not the monsters vs. robots angle so much as a big reveal of the how and why of the monsters. "As we developed the pitch into a movie I became jealous of whoever the a$shole who was going to get to direct this would be."

Again heaping praise on his producers, Del Toro explained that he was allowed to cast the film as a fan. Instead of looking for name actors he was permitted and encouraged to find, "The perfect f*cking actor for the role."

One of these actors is Day, who is most famous for his role as Charlie on FX's It's Always Sunny in Philidephia. While Day entered the theatrical game this summer with his starring role in Horrible Bosses a big budget action film is a bit out of his wheel house. Apparently he got the role because of his grizzled Vietnam vet-style speech in the It's Always Sunny episode, "Charlie, King of the Rats". In exchange for starring in Pacific Rim, Del Toro plans to cameo in the series as a drunken wino sitting in the corner.

Beyond big action and detailing the intricacies of monster anatomical functions, Pacific Rim has two main objectives in Del Toro's mind, "It is my duty to commit to film the finest f*cking monsters ever committed to screen and it is my duty to create the greatest f*cking robots ever committed to screen."

*Del Toro loves testicular metaphors. He has used them extensively every time I have seen him speak live. He also curses like a sailor.

The official synopsis.

QuoteFrom acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' epic sci-fi action adventure "Pacific Rim."

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

I can't wait. Ever since I watched the Gamera trilogy a few months back I've been on a Kaiju binge...to the point where I have Godzilla, Mothra and King Gidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack on in the background right now.  This is just going to make it worse. :-\

Looks like a better version of the all black costumes from GI Joe: Rise of Cobra.

That guy is so great in everything he does.   He was the main bad guy in the HBO show The Wire and I was shocked to see him in BBC shows and discover he's British.
