Tripe

That's true, but Tolkien was a fairly devout Catholic and, if he wanted any theological messages to get through, they'd be ones derived from Catholicism.

Christianity doesn't get sole possession of redemptive themes.  Stories of redemption predate the christian religion, the story of Jesus is quite derivitive of earlier myths.
My post was meant to describe redemption as a story device.  In the "the guy screws up, but comes through in the end" sort of way.

Certainly, Tolkien's work was derived from Christian themes and more specifically his views as a Catholic, but he didn't beat his audience over the head with it.  I think that is why his books have had such broad and long lasting appeal.  Likewise, the movies, for all their changes from the original text have a similar appeal because one doesn't feel to have been preached to while watching them.

In contrast to Avatar, which would have benefited much, in my opinion, if Samuel L. Jackson had popped up every few minutes and said, "Message!", the LOTR films sought to entertain, not "enlighten", and I think they succeeded.

I was actually responding to Doctor Who?s post previous to mine.

I was bieng threated with death by wolf raping before it was cool!.

Yep, if one wants tedious laborious allegory one needs to look to Lewis (or, much later and with a diametrically opposite intent, Pullman).

If I had a TARDIS I wouldn't use it to go see movies.  I'd use it to start a storage unit service.

I think I'd pay some Dutchman to set fire to Lord Snowdon.

Billy Connolly Joining Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit'

QuoteBREAKING: Peter Jackson has set the final piece for his two-picture adaptation of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit. Billy Connolly has joined the cast in the role of Dain Ironfoot, a great dwarf warrior and cousin of Thorin Oakenshield. "We could not think of a more fitting actor to play Dain Ironfoot, the staunchest and toughest of Dwarves, than Billy Connolly, the Big Yin himself. With Billy stepping into this role, the cast of The Hobbit is now complete. We can't wait to see him on the Battlefield!"

The casting comes after Jackson and partner Fran Walsh have completed a good deal of the film. They took a hiatus and went to Sundance to introduce West of Memphis, the documentary about the West Memphis 3, which created waves at the festival because some of the revelations in the film that came from DNA testing and investigative work and forensic testing that was financed by Jackson and Walsh made national headlines. That film is still being shopped for distribution, but Jackson and Walsh returned from the festival to New Zealand to get cracking on the final 100 or so days of production that should be completed by July.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, will be released by Warner Bros for New Line and MGM on December 14, 2012 and the second installment, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, bows December 13, 2013.

By the way, Billy's looking awesome these days.

I can't really see the problem.  I am sure Jackson knows what he is doing and we can't really judge the film until we see it in person when it is released.

48 frame could very well give us a smoother picture and who knows this could be a turning point.  There used to be films shot at 12 or 16 FPS and then it got uped to 24,for all we know in a decade or two 48 could be the new standard.

I say wait and see the film before complaining,I am not going to second guess Jackson with out seeing the movie first.

48 fps.

Discuss.

Can't discuss it until I actually see it in action.  Until then, any opinion I have on the subject is just a temporary one anyway.
