I'd hope not.  It's unnecessary.

I beg to differ.

QuoteTen years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas. I'm excited to announce today that we'll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I'm thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older—and he doesn't! I guess that's why he makes such a wonderful elf.

From PJ's Facebook page (Peter Jackson let's me call him PJ because we're such good friends).

The only way I can see this going bad is if he appears shirtless, riding on the back of an oliphaunt, while firing exploding arrows into the eyeholes of orcs a thousand yards away, and they cut to a shot of Thorin tucking into a haggis he cooked on a fire lit with First Edition copies of The Hobbit.

Of course, with no details, we can't help but be wary. Let's hope PJ doesn't browse the net while writing the script.

Before anyone else starts in on this, for those wondering how the hell this is going to last two movies, this my theory:

It would be my hope that what Jackson will do is adapt some of the stories from the Silmarillion into the script for the Hobbit. I know a lot of Tolkien fans would love nothing more than to see a Silmarillion movie, but the narrative is too fractured to form the basis of a complete story bouncing from a cast of characters. Perhaps Jackson can do flashbacks of the stories of the Elves and how they came to Middle Earth from the Silmarillion, perhaps during the encounters with the Rivendell and Mirkwood Elves. It would be nice to hear about Galadriel's backstory as well as the tales of the Kin slayers and Dark Elves to set up the differences between the Rivendell Elves and the Elves of Mirkwood.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

Last, and certainly not least, is Conan Stevens, who will be playing an Orc called Azog (Orcs are never called Roger or Dennis for some strange reason).  And yes that's his name—Conan! Isn't that cool? Azog is played by Conan! Here's a photo of Conan and I together... I'm pretty tall, probably at least 6′5″ or 6′6″ I would guess, so that gives you some clue how tall Conan is! You can learn all about him at www.conanstevens.com.

Got a busy day's shooting ahead, so I'm about to jump in the car—but look out for the beginning of the 20 questions answers very soon. Thanks for the questions, many are very insightful. I've been through all of them and have a list ready to go.

    Cheers,

    Peter J

Here's an image Jackson posted of himself and Stevens, side-by-side:

I'm sure some people will be very happy about this.

Damn, that's a big dude.   And if he has any acting abilities or can move around well for a man his size, this move should open a TON of doors for him.

Well done.

I fail to see how its hard to understand how this is two movies.  To do a faithful telling and get as much detail from the books as possible, i think they need two movies.  I will not be happy if beorn gets a raw deal out of this.  Plus they need to develop thorin from adventurous to greedy to repentant.  Without time to give him depth i just dont see how this will be possible.

So is the title of this thread going to be changed? I'm excited for this movie, but seeing that Guillermo was going to do it but is now off the project is kind of depressing.

I think Del Toro would be perfect for an adaptation of a Gabriel Garcia-Marquez work. As for LOTR, though, I just wish that every two-bit opportunist in and out of town weren't trying to sue Peter Jackson for tripping on their gardenias or whatever it is this time.  >:(

I can sort of understand why the aborigines were upset that Jackson used their sacred mountain as the location of where all the Evil in Middle Earth resides and why they don't want him to film in that location. I mean how would you feel if people kept referring to your Holy location as the well of all evil?

http://www.deadline.com/2011/06/benedict-cumberbatch-to-voice-smaug-in-the-hobbit/

QuoteAfter reporting today that Luke Evans will play Bard in the Peter Jackson-directed The Hobbit and wondering who'll voice the dragon Smaug, Deadline can now tell you that it will be Benedict Cumberbatch. He'll portray Smaug via motion capture. He is already on the picture, providing the voice of the character Necromancer. This comes as Cumberbatch is getting buzz for his supporting performances in the Steven Spielberg-directed War Horse. And Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, in which he stars opposite Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy and Colin Firth. After drawing raves for his performance in Danny Boyle's stage production of Frankenstein, Cumberbatch was just set to star in the five-part miniseries Parade's End. Cumberbatch continues his role as Sherlock Holmes on the BBC/PBS series, which just won the BAFTA for Best Drama.

Are maoris not aborigines there?

To use the literal meaning yes, in the same way native Americans are aboriginal. However, Australian Aborigines are the only peoples who seem to have the term used to describe them in the modern context.

How can you remake Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy?  AG was perfect in the min series,no one can one up him so why try?

What if he'd said "natives"? I point out that he didn't capitalize it.  I'm not trying to be argumentative here, I'm just very interested in words.

I'd find it odd but I wouldn't have said anything I don't think.  I'm not trying to say he's a bad person, it's just the wrong term.  It'd be like if I called Native Americans "Indians" or something.
