Well unless Jackson is directing it I now have zero interest.   Del Toro was the main reason I was so interested.
I think he would be the likely next candidate. Or perhaps Neill Blomkamp now that he has some industry cred. Besides, its a moot point anyway since who knows how long this crap with MGM is going to last. For all we know Del Toro might do a movie and by the time it's released it would be time for him to hop back on.

I was curious to see what Del Toro would do with it, even though I found Pan's Labyrinth unbelievably overrated. Not horrible, with some cool visuals, but definitely not great. It was basically that year's Avatar for me. :P

Yes, because Jackon's LotR movies had so many puppets having anal sex and people attacking Orcs with lawnmowers  ::)

And Sam Rami's Spiderman movies had Mary Jane being raped by trees.

Doctor Who?

I for one still have Jackson's Lord of the Rings in my top 25 films of all time.  They are my favorite Sci-Fi/fantasy movies bar none.  Are they perfect?  No.  There is no such thing as a perfect  movie, but I don't think they are the best movies out there of their time and that Jackson did the best that could be done with a book that even the writer admitted couldn't be filmed.

I will admit I only want to see The Hobbit if a director with vision and his own sense of style is directing it so unless Jackson or someone else like him takes over I have little interest in this movie now.  I have a feeling it could end up getting rushed through production just to get it out as just another summer blockbuster.

maybe this has been answered earlier in the thread, but why isnt New Line making The Hobbit?  It seem there are some problems with MGM bieng almost bankrupt or something.  I would really hate to see a cheapened version get released just so they could release one.  Like what is going on with the new Pirates movie.

I was bieng threated with death by wolf raping before it was cool!.

I don't think New Line exists anymore.

New Line and MGM were co-financing (New Line with the rights to the North American release, MGM the international release rights.)

I'm conflicted about The Hobbit as a movie.  On the one hand I think PJ's LOTR movies are top-notch and I want no deviation from their feel, look, sound, and presence.  On the other I realize that TH is a completely different kind of book meant for a completely different kind of audience, and figure "fresh blood" will pay off handsomely.  So I was intrigued by del Toro as director.  Now we'll see.  As long as it's not co-directed by Bay or Abrams - we'd get a troupe of 13 dwarves stumping along as fast as they can yelling "Go go go go go go go!" and then exploding.

I'd like to see Jackson take it on, personally.  It could make up for the disappointment of The Lovely Bones and get him back on track.  And while it's sad to see del Toro leave the project, he's got so many other things on his plate that I would like to see that I'm hoping he can get on with his other stuff.

I just hope that Del Toro leaving the project doesn't soil their working relationship. They seemed like they really get along and their styles and the types of movies they like to make seem to mesh well. I would like to see Jackson at least exec produce whatever Del Toro does next. *crosses fingers*please please please Mountains of Madness please please please.

I say give it to Alfonso Cuaron. He knocked it out of the park with Harry Potter 3...

I was sorry to hear of this news.  Hopefully, they can find someone who can do just as well.  Cuaron would be an interesting choice to be sure.
