Good to hear that this movie lost the Best Picture Oscar.

Hey, I did enjoy the movie, but it shouldn't have even been up for Oscar contention in anything other than Special Effects.

Yea, it looks like it won in the proper categories, it is pretty amazing eye candy, sub average story, and a good story done well should be what wins the Oscar.  Can we make this one retroactive and give "As Good as it Gets" the win over Titanic?

Hell, "Moon" would have been a better choice for best picture over Avatar, I still don't get how that picture got no nominations at all...

Moon would've been a great choice for several categories. How it got snubbed is one of the larger Oscar travesties in recent memory.

And yeah, Avatar got what it should've got. Possibly a little more than that (I'm really not sure about that Cinematography win).

Y'know, I find it ironic that the people who say Avatar should not get recognition and should be based solely on its merits (or I guess the lack thereof) also don't wanna see James Cameron win because he's a jerk or something.

Yeah, I'm sure you could draw a vinn diagram of people who hold onto one or the other, but its the people in the crossover section that I find most ironic.  "Don't be political!  Nominate on quality!  .......and Cameron sucks!"

Not sure I've heard anyone say "Cameron sucks" here, but not going to go back and read every post.  The hatred of Titanic has come up.

I'd think if someone thought he sucked then they wouldn't go see the movie, so you need to add another set of people that haven't seen the movie and still don't want it to win.

True Lies is probably the last Cameron movie I didn't have any complaints about, so it has been a while.   There's certainly a feeling of "what could have been" with Avatar, if it was done more like his better movies.

Uh... True Lies was his last movie (excluding Titanic).  The guy really has one of the most impeccable filmographies.  It just goes back to people buying into gossip more than artistry or craftsmanship.  And I just take issue with that.

I think that's the deal. People expect the world from Cameron, especially with the amount of money he brings in, because of his past films. I mean, if I had to rank his movies, I'd probably put Avatar near the bottom, not so much because it's a bad movie (it's not, it's quite firmly in the "Good" category), but it just doesn't stack up to the likes of Aliens, the Terminators, and so on.

Doctor Who?

I find Camaran's movies to be good at best.  The only movie that he has made that I would call great is The Abyss.  The others I think are good popcorn movies but i wouldn't call them great movies that deserve best picture nods.  Sorry that is just how I feel.

Yeah, Cameron on a bad day still makes a better movie than 50% of the rest of the filmmaking world.

And I'd probably bump Aliens and Terminator 2 into the Great category as well, with The Abyss.

50%... really? I've seen tons of good cinema that comes out each year (usually foreign and/or non-hollywood stuff). If we are speaking just in hollywood blockbuster terms, then I'd probably agree with you.

Yeah, big-budget blockbuster stuff. Actually, taking in regards to most modern blockbusters, I'd up that percentage to 70% :P

That's probably why I avoid most of the mainstream movies out there. I normally only go for the obscure or lesser known movies if I have a choice.

Looks like Avatar is hitting DVD on April 22nd (Earth Day, naturally). The catch is that this release is completely bare-bones, devoid even of menus. It's just the movie. The expected stuffed-to-the-gills release is expected in November.

Doctor Who?

Why would you pay money for a movie that doesn't even have menus? How are you supposed to set up options?
