August 14th. I know I'll be at the midnight opening show when that date rolls around, all the buzz I've been reading has been outstandingly posative.

Doctor Who?

I will try to get there on Saturday but I may have to wait until monday.

Darth Geek

The web comments for it have been going on and on about how great it is, and how GORY it is. I really hope this is great, although as far as making my summer, there this obscure thing on the 20th that will make my summer.

Doctor Who?

Well of course that will be the best thing ever but I am talking about new movies.

Darth Geek

It's funny how aweful this year has been after the embarrassment of riches last year.

Doctor Who?

Well having two movies based on action figures will do that to your summer.

Interesting, I'm thinking the opposite. This year has a plethora of good stuff compared to a mostly sparse last year (and I'm speaking simply in terms of number of quality films released).

Doctor Who?

Let's see last year we had Cloverfield,Rambo,Be Kind Rewind,The Bank Job,Iron Man,The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,The Incredible Hulk,WALL-E,The Dark Knight,Tropic Thunder,Appaloosa,Quantum of Solace,Gran Torino,and Defiance.

This year we have Watchmen,Star Trek,Up,Public Enemies,and District 9.

I think last year was better.

I think you are forgetting some from this year, though.

Bruno, The Hangover, Moon, Wolverine, Terminator Salvation, Transformers 2, Drag Me to Hell, Crank High Voltage, Fanboys, Coraline, and Taken. Out of those, the only ones to not get mostly-positive reviews (or box office results) was Transformers and Terminator. I've seen all of them excet for Fanboys and Coraline.

However I agree, last year was probably better in terms of having many, many high quality flicks. Not to say there are NONE this year, but I think we're not quite on par with last year in terms of numbers.

We also have 5 more months to go this year..

What, no love for Taken, Up, The Hangover, and Coraline?

Going by just the bigger blockbusters, yeah, I'll go with last years. But this year also has Crank 2, Splinter, Drag Me to Hell, In the Loop, Observe and Report, and Moon. And that's just so far, as I've got a good feeling about another half dozen or so titles coming soon (Inglourious Basterds, 9, Shutter Island, Avatar, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Grace, for instance).

I see we are on the same page. I haven't seen a couple of the ones you mention, but I'm really looking forward to the "coming soon" titles you mentioned.

I loved (500) Days Of Summer more than anything that came out last year.  And I'm just going to count on loving Inglourious Basterds, so 2009 wins.

You have GOT to see Coraline. Great, great film. One of my top ten favorites so far this year.

My comment was mostly about Summer Blockbusters, as last year we had so many of the major ones that were genuinely GOOD movies, as apposed to this year where dumb but fun tends to be a compliment.

Can't argue with that. And I'm the type who only really went for Iron Man and Dark Knight last year in the blockbuster season (the others I just didn't care enough about). Those two aces go a long way 8)
