Gentlemen, I present to you....Rashômon.

Any movie that can completely annoy me and then win me over in the last ten minutes deserves a mention. Plus the cinematography and Toshirô Mifune's acting were freakin' fantastic!

Another reason why I went ahead and just said every Kurosawa movie.  I've also never seen anything with Mifune where he wasn't fantastic.

Generalize and steal my fun, why don't cha?

By the way, I never liked Hidden Fortress. George Lucas can eat me.
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

I love Hidden Fortress but I can certainly see how someone wouldn't care for it as much as Seven Samurai or Yojimbo.

He took a Grimm's fairy tale and turned it into something that's neither here nor there.

have you ever read grimms fairy tales?   they are full of so violence and things one wouldnt consider child oriented.

I think the point he is making is that he likes disney fairy tales.

kurosawa mifune great.  but how bout kurosawa and shimura.  ikiru is great.  i think shimura is unjustly forgotten in the wake of mifune.

I love Takashi Shimura as well.  I think he gets overlooked a bit simply because of how well he blends into each role.

The point was Captain Gillyweed took it way over the line. Plus, you know... there was no moral to the story. It was just brutal for no reason. Rambo should have been in it.

i believe the point was brutallity in the real world spills over into brutality in imagination and fantasy and even if she does make it to the underground realm she will always be affected by teh brutality she witnessed

The same reason you disliked the film is the reason I liked it. I don't think I ever hated an evil character in a movie as much as him. I was hoping somebody would give him a slow death at the end because of how horrible a person he was (not going anything away). The moral is the fact that someone as 'weak' and innocent as the young girl could stand up against the worst evil. This is a MUCH deeper movie that you think. The girl who seems to have no real power physically or  mentally over this person. And yet she is willing to stand up to this person. The girl represents how a person can be completely pure and unselfish in the face of the most extreme evil. That was the point of the whole movie. There is much more meaning which I won't go into for fear of giving anything away. I found the movie... not depressing, but more uplifting to see how a person could overcome so much without wavering. If this movie had no point... then a slew of other great movies.... passion of the christ, schindler's list, etc.. would not have any meaning either. They all share some major themes between each other and all can be considered 'depressing' if you really wanted to depending on how you look at it. Sometimes cinema is not meant to feel comfortable or to be just pure entertainment. Rambo is a pretty poor comparison to this movie.

That's almost exactly what i saw nearly ten years ago in film school... awesome! Yay for the interweb! Now which film was that exactly? Alexander or Ivan? I've dug out all my old papers and whatnot, but can't seem to find my notes on that particular lecture.  Although, i have a pretty sweet essay on the development and cycle of horror films up to the late 1990s... authored by me! Is it to late to submit a favorite authors list?  ;)
