The brothers Grimm were actually philologists, their collection of folk tales are really the field notes they took while working on a study of the variations in German across the country.

Asking people to tell stories was the easiest way to get naturalistic language use.  :)

Ah. Neat. Never heard that before.

Yes, here's a description of the other important (though significantly less interesting to most people) contribution of the Grimms. :)

Yeah a great film, Bruno Ganz is excellent and it's hard to believe he's the angel from Der Himmel über Berlin (also a great film, damn I left out the German films I like didn't I?)

It's also the source of a great wee youtube clip

I know I already mentioned Ivan the Terrible earlier in this thread, but.......

Brought home Ivan the Terrible Parts I and II over the Christmas holidays and my dad and I watched them back to back (my mom was playing online poker downstairs) and we were enthralled.   The combination of overly hammy (almost silent film) acting, cinematography, scoring and plot was mezmerizing.   I wish to hell he would have lived long enough to do part III.

Flickering Lights (Finish I think) is an awesome "crime drama - male bonding - action" film that will NOT disappoint.

Aguirre:  Wrath of God is Klaus Kinski at his weirdest best.

Gentlemen, I present to you....Rashômon.

Any movie that can completely annoy me and then win me over in the last ten minutes deserves a mention. Plus the cinematography and Toshirô Mifune's acting were freakin' fantastic!
Dammit, Maverick! Why don't you play by the rules?!

"Joel, what's a Harringway?"
"About a pound."

Another reason why I went ahead and just said every Kurosawa movie.  I've also never seen anything with Mifune where he wasn't fantastic.
