I wonder how this will compete with Blame Society's riff of the same movie.

Actually it was Sir William Riff, who gained notoriety for heckling Shakespeare's original plays.

(and who was eventually beheaded by royal decree, but up to that point he had quite a following)

You're thinking of Sir William of Riffton, different guy. "Sir" William Riff was a notorious beastial-rapist who had his first name changed to "Sir" so that people would trust him with their dogs.

Indomitus

"Riff" was a musical term before it was anything else, and it was co-opted by Best Brains to kind of describe what they were doing.  Exactly who first coined it is really a moot point, and kind of a ridiculous argument to pursue.  For all we know, it could have been Trace or Jim or one of the crew in an off-hand comment one day, and Joel or Mike just picked it up and used it.

Sorry. Pet peeve.
If everyone went off on every pet peeve all the time, this board would be a verbal slaughterhouse.

Invader_quirk

Just be happy I don't get on your case about the meaning of "moot", then.

The official riffers almost seem to go out of their way to riff the SW universe from the outside looking in.

Please, they are not the "official riffers". They're the riffers from Rifftrax.

Sorry. Pet peeve.

Wow.  You need bigger peeves.

I don't know if they go out of their way to riff the SW universe from the outside looking in. I just assume they aren't huge fans of Star Wars in general. Nothing wrong with that. I just want them to keep making me laugh. As for the "official riffers," I usually just call them Mike, Kevin, and Bill. Sometimes I call them The Film Crew. Technically everyone involved in Rifftrax Presents and Cinematic Titanic could also count as "official riffers", so that term doesn't really narrow it down.

Did I eat crazy pills or drop some bad acid?!? This was a thread comparing the official rifftrax release and the Blame Society release of the same movie. It's laid out right in the subject title. There were only two things in play. Rifftrax and Blame Society. I referred to the Rifftrax version as the "official" version because I am on their forum. Relative to this sub-board, which is dedicated to THEIR product, I consider them as the official riffers. I wasn't trying to speak to all that the glorious kingdom of Riffdom entails... as this thread was clearly defined in scope.... and that scope didn't include anything and everything that might have the title of "riffer" attached. Yes, we can all be riffers and nobody owns the exclusive rights to the title... I hope everybody feels better...

Sorry to be OT again, but this should answer the "inventing the riff term" question

QuoteDid you coin the term "movie-riffing"?

Yes'm, and that came much later. We were doing shows full time and I heard Dana Gould use the term "riffing" to discribe a joke session he had observed once between two comics. I'd also known about "riffs" in music: you've got jazz "riffs" and blues "riffs" and guitar "riffs." If you take those two meanings and put them together, you come pretty close to what Trace and Josh and I started doing to movies in the late eighties and early nineties. It made sense to me to label what we did as "movie-riffing" or just "riffing". To me "riffing" is using a movie as a springboard for other ideas, observations, and jokes -- sort of a moving, talking Rorschach test.

Sorry to bother he flow of the conversation, but is there a link to the Blame Society riff? I'm too lazy to search for it.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?
