I generally dismiss the Golden Globes each year, but this year they actually gave me something to cheer for.

In Bruges with 3 nominations!  I was beginning to think that my favorite movie of 2008 was going to be forgotten this awards season.  Now hopefully, the studio will see this as reason to give the movie a renewed push for Academy consideration.

The Globes and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are still a joke though.   :P

Ditto. Loved that film, and the fact that it's getting some actual attention is a great thing. I'm really hoping this gets it (at the very least) some more attention (that movie was too good to be a sleeper hit). I will note, though, that I'm torn between it and Burn After Reading taking Best Comedy.

Apart from that, the list is a combination of no surprises and WTF (Seriously, just one nomination for Milk (sure it's Best Actor for Penn, but still)? Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder (don't get me wrong, I thought he was incredibly hilarious, but not award-winningly so)? A complete snubbing of Synecdoche, New York? Ridiculous). Sweden continues to disappoint me to no end, and could this single nod for TDK set precedent?

Whatever the case, for me the Globes have always been basically a dry run for the Oscars, so it's no worries right now.

Also, iv3rdawG, The Wrestler did get a nod for Best Original Song

Yeah. I meant for best picture. And after seeing The Curious Case of Benjamin Button last night I'm surprised that Cate Blanchett didn't get a nomination.

I wish they'd have a "Don't-Give-A-Fuck Awards" for everyone who doesn't give a fuck about any of these stupid awards shows. The less the nominees care, the more awards they win. I'd sweep the show and not give a fuck! And then they'd give me another "Don't-Give-A-Fuck"!

You sir, are my new god.

Nikki Finke is reporting that the Oscars are making a serious play to have Huge Jackman host the next broadcast.  I, for one, welcome this news greatly because 1. Huge Jackman is a superstar! and 2. the Oscars have seriously blown the last few years 3. there's a slim possibility it'll just be Jackman doing sit-ups for like three and half hours 4. seriously he's a very good showman, a throwback even, he can do it all, he's shown a good comfortability with all genres pretty much..

Here are the particulars that matter:

OSCARS WANT HUGH JACKMAN TO HOST: He'll Accept If Academy Show "Different"

EXCLUSIVE: I reported yesterday that the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences had chosen someone "way outside the box" to host the 81st Oscars on February 22nd. Today, I've learned that the person is not just outside the box but outside this country. The Academy Awards is going international with its emcee choice -- Australian actor Hugh Jackman, star of X-Men, Australia, and the upcoming Wolverine, as well as People Magazine's 2008 "Sexiest Man Alive". But, and it's a BIG but, while the 40-year-old Sydney-born thesp of English parentage has received the AMPAS offer and is very interested, I'm told that he's not yet fully committed. Because there's still a lot of negotiating ahead between his showbiz representatives and AMPAS. I've learned that the people around Jackman want to know exactly what would be expected of him, especially when it comes to opening the Oscar broadcast. One segment of the show which reps for Jackman are objecting to specifically is the joke-telling monologue. "I don't want that for him," an insider told me. "He is an actor with big movies behind him and one coming this summer. He didn't work the last 20 years to suddenly be a stand-up comedian."

In recent years of Oscar telecasts, even going back decades, the ceremony has been emceed by mostly TV or movie comedians -- whether Will Rogers and George Jessel in the 1930s, Bob Hope off and on for the next three decades, Johnny Carson in the 1980s, even David Letterman in 1995. In the 1990s and 2000s, there's been a mix of film funnypeople like Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, and Steve Martin as well as stand-up comedians and TV personalities like Chris Rock, Ellen DeGeneres and Jon Stewart. But now that producers Larry Mark and Bill Condon plan to get rid of the joke-telling portion of the show this year (as I reported Thursday and thought a smart move: these one-liners are usually understood only by the movie industry and so inside that TV viewers are left bewildered), it opened up the possibility of an actor hosting. "If this is a different version of the Oscars than in previous years, then Hugh would be great. But I have no interest in him being Billy Crystal." a Jackman insider told me.

I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

And People.com reports that they got him.

I like Hugh Jackman.  He seems a genuinely good guy from all the stuff I've seen of him.

Seeing that he's also a Tony winner I expect him to be fairly good in front of the audience. He seems like a pretty cool guy too.

I thought John Stewart and Steve Martin were pretty good hosts.  Whoopi Goldberg always sucked, though.

You'll have to excuse my husband, when he drinks his gay tendencies come out. He has a massive crush on Huge Jackman.

P.S. He used to have a massive crush on Kevin Costner.

I also like Hugh Jackman, he's a good showman. Although I do hope Jon Stewart does is again another year, he was always my favorite host (and I liked his jokes, I thought they were great. Especially last year).

Should prove to be an interesting show.
