Here's one award The Dark Knight won't win: the score!

And so on...

I actually agree with -

EDIT: Actual response coming, BS wiped

EDIT the Second: Upon actually reading it, I agree with Greg. Very arrogant indeed.

I don't think you actually read what the article said.

Yeah, just sorta skimmed it (sorry, was in a rush when I wrote it. Thought I had a point, but I guess not). Obligatory  :-[ and edit while I think up a proper response.

I have to admit I'm way behind this year on the Oscar buzz, and have yet to see any movies that (I think, anyway) have been bandied about as contenders.

I do have a question though:  if Wall-E did manage a Best Picture nod, could it still be nominated for Best Animated Film as well?

I think it could.  There was a tangentially related situation several years ago, when Michael Moore withdrew Fahrenheit 9/11 from consideration for Best Documentary Feature, in hopes of garnering it a Best Picture nomination.  Moore thought that, unable to give the movie its mortal-lock documentary Oscar, the voters would honor it the only way left to them. (They didn't, which goes back to my previous comments that Oscar voters don't like to be told what to do, even ones favorably inclined toward the potential nominee.)  There was no hint that F9/11 was ineligible for Best Picture while it was eligible for Best Documentary Feature.  Moore was trying to game what you could call a ghetto-ized system, where documentaries got no real Best Picture consideration because they already had "their own category."  Wall-E is currently bound up by the same system:  it has "its own category," so voters are unlikely to consider it for Best Picture.

Returning to the original point, I believe voters are free to nominate Wall-E for Best Picture.  They're just unlikely to.

{Disclaimer:  my analysis is not meant to be a commentary on the actual merits of either Fahrenheit 9/11 or Wall-E.  You can decide those on your own.}

I think Milk also deserves consideration for best picture and best actor, Sean Penn. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it, even though I don't usually watch gay culture films and I thought it was a very heart felt film, that will really make you connect with the struggles of these people in the film.. But currently my favorite film this year is still the Dark Knight, but Milk wasn't bad either
Whoa... I know kung fu.

Well, never mind, mere hours after I posted the original article, The Dark Knight's became undisqualified.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/the_big_picture/2008/12/alert-the-acade.html

QuoteMy sources say the Motion Picture Academy has reversed its decision to disqualify the score for "The Dark Knight." Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, who collaborated on the music, will now be able to compete in the best original score category. The Academy had ruled the score ineligible last month, saying there were too many composers--five, in all--listed on the music cue sheet. I can't get the Academy's executive director Bruce Davis on the phone, but I've seen an Academy release saying its music branch executive committee voted to change the decision last Friday. When Davis and I spoke earlier last week, he was still defending the decision, saying that the Academy's music branch "sees this as an award, like cinematography or directing, where you want to award a single creator. This isn't like visual effects. Except for extraordinary circumstances, it's an award that should go to one person."

Bruce Davis is a moron.

Cool, I deeply enjoyed the Dark Knight soundtrack, I hope it gets Oscar =).

Anyone surprised by the buzz Gran Torino is getting? The trailer was really bad.

Really? Bad in what way?

Acting mostly. Eastwood just didn't seem himself. I know he's not playing himself but none of it seemed right.

I really liked the trailer.  Eastwood has been very good about embracing the realities of old age.  This isn't Bruce Willis dubbing in dialogue as his we see the back of his stuntman's head taking punches and running and jumping and falling down.  Or Sylvester Stallone playing a 'roided up Vietnam vet.

He's slowly been dismantling his previous onscreen persona and tweaking the conventions of the genres that made him an action star.
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

I wish they'd have a "Don't-Give-A-Fuck Awards" for everyone who doesn't give a fuck about any of these stupid awards shows. The less the nominees care, the more awards they win. I'd sweep the show and not give a fuck! And then they'd give me another "Don't-Give-A-Fuck"!
This iRiff will only be on sale for another few hours. Get it while it's cheap!

Well, it's fun to complain about them when they get it wrong.  That's primarily what keeps me watching.  One of several insubstantial things that it's fun to complain about.
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

I generally dismiss the Golden Globes each year, but this year they actually gave me something to cheer for.

In Bruges with 3 nominations!  I was beginning to think that my favorite movie of 2008 was going to be forgotten this awards season.  Now hopefully, the studio will see this as reason to give the movie a renewed push for Academy consideration.

The Globes and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are still a joke though.   :P
