So your question is actually why did they change the basic format of being "truthful" with the artifacts and alter the design of the skulls?

I guess Spielberg and Lucas like the idea of the skulls, but couldn't come up with something compelling with the original designs so they changed them.  *shrug*

Tripe

But I meant within the narrative, do they even bother to mention it?

RoninFox

There is mention that the skull isn't like the known crystal skulls that had already been found

Ah OK then well at least they did that.

I'm sure I could have probably come up with a compelling story using the real forms though.

OK still haven't seen the film but why is the skull elongated, the actual Crystal Skulls are just models of standard Human Skulls.

You're asking this question when you know that George Lucas was involved in this movie?
Being a genocidal maniac is not one of my turn ons.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

That's what I was saying about the alien thing being retarded.  It just seems like the jumped on the latest trend instead of being creative, like the other movies.

I agree with your friend. CM916.  The ending was the dumbest part, even though I saw it coming.  I had hoped Indy would find out the "psychic" was full of it and the whole Roswell/Area 51 thing had some other meaning.  I knew he would not, bu I still hoped.

I imagine the pitch went something like:
Speilburg: UFOs rock!
Lucas: Fo' Shizzle!  Aliens RULE.  Think of the cool CGI in store!  Midochlorians be damned, we're going smack this franchise up, bitches.

I like to picture Lucas as a dorky imitation of Snoop.  Sue me.

We need an impressionist to do that scene.

Meanwhile, did the Russian chick ever actually prove herself to have ANY psychic ability?

AmandaGal

I think they got sidetracked by the cool aliens and AMAZING CGI coolness and forgot to write that into the plot.

It was kind of mentioned and then never brought up again.

I know that the fundamental reason is the beflanneled one but I was interested in what sort of gymnastics were involved in bolting the change on to the movie.  :)

According to Vanity Fair the conversation went something like this

Lucas: Aliens are like sooo cool, we have to do this steve!
Speilberg: Er, not so sure about that George.
Lucas: Ah go on! YouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillyouwillYOUWILL!!!!!
Spielberg: Sigh

I didn't like this movie.  6/10.  I like the originals, with The Last Crusade being my favorite.

doggans

I will confess, though, that while I enjoyed the movie greatly, part of me would have much rather seen a big-screen "Fate of Atlantis" adaptation.

I think the movie was written to be like a 50s b-movie, which involved aliens. Just like the 30s ones were written to be like Republic serials.  Relax, guys. Nobody's raping your mothers, it's just a movie.

Actually, that's what's taken me by suprise- the lack of people getting really upset on the board. So far, at worst it's been compared to the other 3 films unfavorably. No one's called Mother Rape on the board yet.

Yeah I mean I don't mind that it has Aliens, they aren't really an area of the supernatural I find especially interesting as a narrative device but it's not like I want to march on the Skywalker Ranch or anything.

Well, her accent DID do the occasional disappearing act... :)
