i just wanted to post my thoughts on violence in moveis and horror films.  i have no issue with violence in films and i think people asying saw is extrememly violent and wont watch that should watch ichi the killer.  but i like for the violence to have a reason behind it or at least to serve a good story.  a big problem i have with a lot of horror films is the tendency to focus on jumps rather than true fear.  holy shit that guy just jumped out rammed apool cue through that dudes brain.  makes me jump sure but really scary no.  this is also my argument against fast zombies but thats a whole other can of worms.  in order to make a truly frightening film there has to be real characters that the audience can relate to and some build up to the action.  the scariest film to me is david cronenberg's the Fly.  we get to know the two main characters very well and then as we watch brundle's descent it is truly horrific and tragic.  its also very very gory.  the film draws on fears of seeing al oved one in pain and not being able to do a thing about it and its extremely frightening to me.
