The crappy movie was made by Rankin/Bass. I have no idea who "Bakashi" is.

Maybe you should learn.

RALPH BAKSHI did not make the Hobbit, he made the quirky rotoscoped Lord of the Rings movie.

And, heaven help me, I agree with Isaac about subtitles.

eh, close enough to piss isaac off, and thats all i was going for.  :)

greg what is it you like about subtitles?

Regardless, I'm sure that the Pan's Labrynth DVD has both subtitles and an english dub, so there's no reason to not watch it if you don't like subtitles.

EDIT:  Looks like there isn't an english dub on the dvd.  Oh well.

The fact that it doesn't take away from an actor's performance like dubbing does.

MarkAndrew

Just to piggy back off of Greg, I prefer subtitles.   I really appreciate being able to compare the translation (subtitle) with the actual dialog.  There are subtlties that can be missed or just plain bad interpretation.   I see that a lot in Anime dubs.

On the other hand...reading subtitles can distract from the action and performance on the screen, so I understand those who hate to 'read' a movie.

GregMcduck

It just takes practice, is all. When I started my journey as a film snob in my early teens, I had a hard time with subtitles too. Now that I've been at it for several years, reading the subtitles and still fully grasping what's going on in the movie is easy-pleasy.

MrTorso

I have never had a problem with subs. I have been collecting Hong Kong films for 20 years and those old tapes of mine were the worst subtitles ever. Once the tape went 2 generations the white subs would fade into the backgrounds. Also the HK production houses would spend the last $10 of the budget for the English subs so you had misspellings and horrible grammar. Still though I prefer that then a dub and in the case of the asshole Harvey Weinstien he would have movies almost re-written for the dubbing. With Dragon Dynasty he at least offers original language unlike 90% of the HK films he released at Miramax. Now you just have to watch out for his DUB-TITLES.

Anywhoo back OT:

Del Toro should be good for this. I'll go see it. While I liked Pan's Labyrinth I prefer his earlier films like Chronos and Devil's Backbone.

Chaos

There is a difference between being physically capable of reading subtitles and preferring not to, and being too stupid to read subtitles. The fact remains that processing written words uses a completely different part of your brain than hearing and interpreting spoken dialogue does, and thus the original point that subtitles have already lost the intended effect of the dialogue even if they ARE well translated (which is often difficult or impossible), and are therefore LOGISTICALLY inferior to a dub. It's not a matter of opinion, it's science. Everything beyond that is personal preference, and cannot be considered a winnable argument (by anyone sane).

Incidentally, Isaac, it must be difficult shouldering hatred for the entire world. That's a lonely road to walk. Maybe there really is such a thing as people getting what they deserve...

At what point did every one of Isaac's opinions become "Hitler opinions"? Yeah, he's made shitty posts before, but I wouldn't put him on my "Top Ten List of Assholes on the Rifftrax Forum." He ain't our Zardoz.

It took 4 pages but someone finally brought up Devil's Backbone.  Thats definitely my favorite Guillermo movie.

I thought Hellboy was a terribly average movie, though I didn't dislike it.  But I enjoyed Pan's Labrinyth, Cronos, and even Blade 2 quite a bit.   I would be very surprised if this Hobbit gig panned out (no pun intended).
I've sort of fused Flashdance with MC Hammer shit.

Jackson's already done three LOTR movies and it would be nice to see what a new director would bring to another part of the LOTR universe   Hellboy was good cartoon fun (lucky for him that Ron Pearlman (sp?) was around to handle the roll) and Pan's Labrynth was a wonder movie.   I can see his style working in a fictional world of hobbits.

As far as sub-titles go, I generally prefer them to havine another voice dubbed over.   There is almost no way that a voice actor reading the lines could put the same emotion and feel into the role as the film's real actor.    Language barrier aside, that still comes thru.

One of my favorite films is "Das Boot" and I MUCH prefer the sub-titled version over the dubbed version....... even though most of the German actors did their own English dubbing.
