I haven't seen Pan's Labyrinth mainly because, well, I hate reading subtitles. Hellboy was decent, but I think this was mainly due to Ron Pearlman. To be honest, I'd rather they just waited until Jackson is available.

This is what I'm talking about when I comment on the fact that many fans of Jackson's LOTR films are cinematically illiterate. If you're above the age of four and able to read, you should not hate reading subtitles. Even people who can't watch black and white films can watch subtitled films if they're in color.

I'm not being an asshole. If he doesn't like reading subtitles, he needs to learn.

heh, so do you disagree with miyazaki who states he hates it when his movies are subtitled because thats not how films are supposed to be watched?  He states that since reading and listening use two very different areas of the brain, you actually lose the intent or purpose of the movie by subtitling it, thus a new dubbing is always preferable?

How will you learn Killeroo?

Spoiler

Don't bother resisting.

Well, that's different. If a director does not intend his films to be dubbed, they shouldn't be seen that way

I personally prefer hearing the actor's original performances and getting something out of the acting that you wouldn't get from listening to some faceless guys in a studio. Yes, I know that it works in animation. But that's entirely different. In an animated film, actors are given direction, and are often able to give rich performances. (And chalk that up for radio and any other medium involving actors in a studio that I haven't covered in this post.) When a film is dubbed, usually the actors are thrown together and have to record the dialogue in a hurry so they can use that studio for something else, so the quality of the performances there might not be as good as the original. Especially back in the old grindhouse days where spaghetti westerns and kung-fu movies were treated that way, and you got this ridiculous "ha-ha, I am your master even though my words aren't attaching to my lips" kind of stuff. I think you get where I'm coming from. I only really watch dubbed films if I don't have a choice.

yeah thats all well and good and all but what do have to say about his actual argument?  you know, the one about it using differnet parts of the brain to interpet the film so when your watching a foreign film subtitled youre already losing most of the film.  of course this doesnt even begin to get to the fact that subtitles are always inaccurate due to the fact languages arent 100% translatable.  If you really care about authentisitiy you should just learn the language.

i always read when i watch tv, just like i always take a bath while im making toast

I don't mind subtitles, but my problem is it is too hard to really understand the film if you are constantly reading. With a film like PL, i want to just watch the visuals.
But not liking subtitles doesn't mean you can't read. And i know the czech actor who dubbed Frodo's voice for the czech version. He would be very upset to here people assume he wasn't actually trying when he dubbed the films.

I don't mind subtitles for films, but I'd really rather have a good dub and preferably with the same actors, like they did in Crouching Tiger.  I think Miyazaki's point is a good one too, that you can become distracted from the visuals because you're reading the subtitles, though I suspect being Japanese he has to endure more of that kind of thing because of the amount of American imports they get.  Especially on big-budget action movies where the pace is not exactly conducive to reading :)

plus english is hard to read top to bottom at the left side of the screen  :)
