Beyond riffing: Redubbing!

OK, riffing's fun, and the way MST3K did the shadowtheater version ramped it up to a level we'll all miss forever.

But what goes beyond riffing?

REDUBBING!!!

I've seen various efforts at redubbing old movies with new dialogue, the best being "J men forever". Years and years ago there was a show called the "Canned film festival" that redubbed some old movies,  Orson wells' "the stranger" being one of them I remember.

TV shows got into it when Niteflite redubbed an old japanese robot series as "Dynaman" and god I hope you saw that! If you haven't, look for it NOW!

And even the blob couldn't escape being redubbed as "blobbermouth" even tho I've never managed to catch it.

So does anyone still do redubbing? Riffing has become far and widespread, but I don't see a lot of rebudding anymore.
Everyone who believes in justice, racial equality and free speech should support Duane "the Dog" Chapman and boycott anyone who takes action against him.

I hears that Steve Smith, the actor who played Red Green on The Red Green Show (a great Canadian show shown on PBS in the US) has a new show where he redubbs movies to have completely different plots. Has anybody seen it?

The best re-dubbing flick I have seen is called Hercules Recycled

Here's the plot summary:
Two famous wide-screen blockbusters, Hercules and Hercules Unchained have been re-edited into one, fast-paced, outrageous comedy-adventure - Hercules Recycled. It's 2024 A.D. Technology has vanished. MTV is but a memory. And commuters travel by horse-drawn chariot. But one hope remains - a lost, secret energy formula written on the back of a golden bath mat which can restore civilization to its former splendor! Only one man is buff enough to stand against blood-thirsty special interest groups, battle savage fast-food mutants, and capture the formula - that man is TV exercise show host Burt Galaxy (Steve Reeves)!

This was only ever released on VHS back in 1994. I made a copy of it on DVD-R if anyone is interested in seeing it?

It takes a little getting used to at first (kinda slow), but after the first 1/4 it gets good.

Adult Swim loves to play the redubbing game with old Hanna Barbara cartoons. (At least they used to.) Beyond obvious efforts like Space Ghost and Sealab, they did a bunch of shorts which were pretty much straight-up redubs, with slight changes to the animation.

(My personal favorite)

The following aren't exactly redubs, more like smash ups, but they're close.

Here's something I made last summer when I was doing my rifftrax reauthor for Grey's Anatomy:

And here's something else that I found homorous:

Heated Seats iRiffs: Touched by an Angel | Marked for Death | Runaway | Heated Shorts (shorts collection)

By the way, ware we inoring the old Wody Alle film "What's Up, Tiger Lilly?"

Because What's Up, Tiger Lily isn't all that good.

And lets not forget one of the funniest re-dubbing shows:

Most Extreme Elimination Challenge

PsypherPunk

Don't forget Hercules Returns. It would appear that Hercules films are ripe for this.

I know it's a little low-brow humor, but one of my favorite movies to this day is Steve Oedekerk's Kung Pow!: Enter the Fist. That was a very clever redub.

Straight redubs can be good but can also be very, very lame. I don't think it's fair to compare them to riffing, since they are a completely different art form. In my opinion, riffing is more clever, but redubs take more overall work.

Back in the mid-80's there used to be a late-night TV show called "Mad Movies" and they re-dubbed old flicks. I'm not sure if they are in any way related to the L.A. Connection's "Mad Movies" who are doing the exact same thing now. I remember it being pretty entertaining for a 10 yr. old.

Wouldn't  Steve Matrin's "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" be considered a redub of sorts?

Junkyard

I'd say it's something different entirely. There the comedy was based around the original fims' lines, but in a re-dubbing, the comedy is built around the new lines.
