Only, for irony's sake, you use a steady cam.

Hmm...see, when I think 1-18-08, I think of the day Road House is showing at the Uptown Theater in Minneapolis.  (I'm SO going!)

I have a bad feeling that the first 15 minutes will be us watching this party with shakeycam. Deeeeep hurting...

RoninFox

Whenever someone says shakeycam I think about the Sam Raimi shakeycam (camera bolted to the center of a long piece of wood with a cameraman on either end so you can run and lift the camera over obstacles, the camera responsible for most of the demon POV shots in the Evil Dead series)

Ha-ha, so do I.   But I call it the "2 by 4 cam".

Zardoz!

I can stand shaky cam, what really got to me was the "jerk, blur and focus" cam used in early eps of the new battlestar galactica series.

As for Cloverfield, I like the shaky-cam effect.  It puts me right in the movie, and not being able to see some of the action helps with the suspense.

trailer seemed to handle that well too, remember watching it about a week ago and still can remember seeing the camera on the missiles being fired at the monster as the guy goes down the stairs of the subway.... probably not best example from the trailer, but it gave me hope

Get ready for total Harmonic Geek Convergence:  "Cloverfield" will carry the first teaser for the upcoming "Star Trek" film.

I'm not sure whether this is a brilliant move by the suits (guaranteeing that Trekkies will come see their movie) or a dumb one (the geeks were already coming, so they should have put the teaser with some other movie).  Discuss.

Bah, no self-respecting geek worth his weight in cheetos would go to a shitty movie just to see the latest geek trailer... they would just download the trailer online (which would be available roughly 20 minutes after the end of the advanced screening of said shitty movie). :)

Yeah, we've gotten past the days of people crowding into Wing Commander just to see the Star Wars Episode I trailer then leave...haven't we?   Please tell me we have.   :speechless:

Well if nothing else, we've gotten past the days of people crowding into Wing Commander, and that's progress if ever I have seen it. :^)

I've never had a problem with shaky-cam movies making me nauseous or anything.  But I think the shaky-cam is only appropriate for movies like this and Blair Witch, where they are actually supposed to be handheld.  As opposed to Michael Bay or Paul Greengrass, who use shaky-cam during "action" shots in their flicks, but all it does is obscure the action and disorient the veiwer.

A fine line, yes, but the shaky-ness is justified when a character in the movie is actually controlling the camera.

You're correct.  The shaky cam was justified for use in those movies, but it doesn't change the fact that heavy use of the shaky cam makes the viewer want to vomit.

So... it doesn't look like it'll be playing in a theater near me. Maybe one half an hour distant, but.... huh. Whatsupdat?
