K, so this deserves it's own thread cuz the advertising campaign is like a gigantic Penguin Riddle....

Basically, the movie going my the title of 1-18-08, aka Cloverfield, aka Parasite, aka Monstrous (recently denied at comic-con) is a JJ Abrams project that involves some sort of monster and how a bunch of average joes deal with it.

That doesn't seem like much, but the way it's being marketed and the way it is being filmed is incredibly cool. The teaser trailer is a true teaser, and the websites popping up all over the place effin' rock.

If you go to the official site: www.1-18-08.com and you flip around the photos that appear there, you will see writing that appears on the backs of two of them:

Quote
Robbie,

Here, use this photo to send a message of my hotness far and wide!!! I'm gonna miss the hell out of ya!!

Love, Jamie

Don't forget who takes care of you!

Love J

I am intrigued and addicted to the mystery, and cannot wait for an official title and release date! If anyone comes up with more 1-18-08 info, please post it here!

I thought the teaser before Transformers was definitely intriguing, but most of the crowd didn't seem to give it more than a Huh? Whatever response. I think people are afraid it's another Blair Witch Project - brilliant marketing for a crap, headache-inducing movie. Giving the film a title might be a good idea, folks you can't get audiences talking without a title. Normal people don't go around discussing "the upcoming JJ Abrams project." I'm not so fond of this new viral marketing stuff, especially considering the types of movies that use it (The Dark Knight for example) don't really need it the hype. That teaser got my attention, though.

J-Proof

The reaction of our theater audience for transformers was crazy when the trailer played.

I can see what you're saying with Blair Witch, but  I think this movie will be a great example of the potential that Blair Witch had.

Well I have to hand it to them. If they had advertised it in a straight-forward manner, I would have already stuffed it into the "Ignore" bin in my brain, along with most other horror movies that come along. They have my attention. Whether they hold it or not, I suppose, Depends on what the movie ends up being. :^)

Crazy how? I'm really looking forward to, um, whatever it is, myself but just gauging the reaction of the two audiences I saw Transformers with, I'm not so sure about the marketing startegy. It was mostly "Um, what the hell was that?" "What's that movie called?" "I dunno." "That was stupid. Is the whole movie like that?" "Was that the Statue of Liberty" "What was? I dunno, I wasn't really paying attention." Of course, most people around here just ignore trailers and babble right through them. And through the opening credits, and most of the movie, and get up to get popcorn or pee, then come back asking "What happened?" "I dunno. Stuff." Never over-estimate the movie-going public.

J-Proof

wow! really? Our audience was talking about it even though Transformers had already started! People had to shush each other! It was really cool --

Haha -- and I've seen my fair share of those kinds of movie-goers myself =P

I think its worth noting that even though they are marketing this movie around JJ Abrams he did not write or direct it.  He's credited as a producer.  But the marketing campaign is working.  After a group of my brothers friends saw the preview they all started telling him about 'the new JJ Abrams movie'.

The writer has worked on Buffy and Lost, so he's from good stock, but I'm not going to let myself get too excited.
I've sort of fused Flashdance with MC Hammer shit.

Two notes:
One- I really like how they're approching advertising on this one.
Two- I'm hoping for a Kaiju film. (You probably couldn't have guessed that.)

Alright, guys. *cracks nuckles* You've mentioned the secret messages on the back of the pictures. Turns out there's a lot more going on then just that. I've been following this little game very closely, and here's what we know so far.

During the trailer, there's a shot of a guy wearing a shirt with an odd logo on it:

After further examination, we find the logo says "SLUSHO!" This is not a real product. Further searching reveals the offical Slusho website:

http://www.slusho.jp/

This site has been CONFIRMED to be related to the movie. The site is very cryptic, with mysterious images popping up, and a history section that appears to be related to the plot of the film. Slusho is a (fictional) Japanese company, and as you remember, the main character in the trailer, Rob, is leaving for Japan, which is why he's getting a going-away party. There's at least one Slusho product floating around his house, and Slusho is a Japanese-only company, is we can assume that Rob is going away to work for Slusho.

What a frozen soft drink product has to do with a monster movie remains to be seen.

This was all we had after a while, but then, on 1-18-08.com, the images began to have writing on them. On the fifth picture, it says:

Quote"Lascano, Platt, and Robbie, January 2008. Robbie, Here, use this photo to send a message of my hotness far and wide!!! I'm gonna miss the hell out of ya!! Love, Jamie."

After some searching, we discovered this Jamie mentioned on the picture has a myspace page:

http://www.myspace.com/jamielascano

And through that, we discovered the Myspace page of several other people, all of whom were characters in the trailer.

http://www.myspace.com/robbyhawkins
http://www.myspace.com/hudsonplatt
http://www.myspace.com/jj_hawkins
http://www.myspace.com/lily_ford
http://www.myspace.com/marlenadiamond
http://www.myspace.com/beth_mcintyre

And that's all we have so far. Everything I've shown you has been confirmed to be related to this one movie. It's pretty far out.

It's another Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie, mark my words.

...

A friend of mine is working on this film... which, unfortunately means that i'm going to have to keep my mouth shut.
