Bemoan a fourth Indy all you want folks but we all know that every last one of your butts will be in theaters watching this next May.

The same way you were there for Revenge of the Sith even though Attack of the Clones "sucked", and were there for Attack of the Clones even though Phantom Menace "sucked", and were there for Phantom Menace even though Return of the Jedi "sucked", etc, etc, etc, etc.

And thus does Hollywood make its fortune.

Butts in seats, people, that's all that matters. darthvedder81 is right - it doesn't matter how much we know it's going to suck, because IT MIGHT NOT, so we'll be there. Because what Hollywood is really selling is hope. :)

I am proud to say I broke that chain.  I have never, ever seen Episode III.

And now, of course, it's the upcoming Rifftrax, so odds are I'm going to get sucked into watching George Lucas's crowning bantha-flop after all.  Curse you, Nelsoooooooooon!
Buy P.S.Productions' iRiffs.  NOW AVAILABLE:

Aww Ep 3 really is the best of the prequels and almost sits up there with the OT in my book. It's got the most awesome space battle commited to film and some great Jedi-action. :^)

A "flop" which made a half a billion dollars worldwide. Not that that's necessarily a gauge of quality, but I don't think flop is the right choice of words.

But I applaud your integrity. I similarly did not see Bored of the Rings III: Return of the King after Bored of the Rings II: Shield Surfin' Gay Elves!

Chaos

Yes, it was the best of the prequels, putting it at the 6,999,999,998th best movie of all time, right behind The Land Before Time 47.

I enjoyed Manos, even without the jokes, because the fact that the guy thought he could make a great movie with no budget and it came off as inherently pathetic.

Lucas, on the other hand, spent millions upon millions of dollars pissing the whole franchise down the crapper while he perfected his digital eyelash technology. He doesn't even understand how to START telling a story.

Sorry, but the later 3 Star Wars movies were FAR worse than movies like The Crawling Eye or Manos, because at least those movies weren't PRETENTIOUS. They don't slap you in the face and say "You are required by law to love us, so fuck you." :)

Campbell was dead, he had nobody to crib from.

the long undertow

I think in part what happened with Star Wars is the OT relied heavily on all the stuff Campbell talked about, from story to design.  It drew from all kinds of sources for all aspects of the production.  The prequels, however, focused on design, and the story didn't draw from universal myths.  What you end up with is a highly decorated, almost cartoony epic that doesn't rely on 1000s of years of storytelling and history to build itself up.  It ends up feeling jumbled and plastic, and it (and we) clearly suffered for it.

In part, Indiana Jones deals with the same problem.  Raiders and Last Crusade drew from epic Biblical legends, so there was a sort of historical authenticity to them.  Temple of Doom focused on a legend that people weren't as familiar with (plus all the liberties they took with the culture), so it was weaker in that sense.  With Crystal Skulls, that problem resurfaces.  What do we know about the crystal skulls?  They aren't a well-known legend.  A story possibly involving Roswell and Central American civilizations and aliens and mysticaly skulls might be interesting, but I just don't see it as an Indiana Jones story.  Hopefully the title and the speculation on the plot up to this point has been leading people in the wrong direction and the story revolves around something else.  Is anyone aware of what else the skull could be?

Not to defend the prequel trilogy... but it was rooted in ancient politics and government, and based loosely on Roman history. How a republic becomes an empire, treachery in the senate, imperialistic war, gladiator games. These films were at least as linked to historical stories as the original trilogy.

Bollocks. They took some of their imagery from films about the Republic but damned if there was anything of substance there.

Yeah... that's why i used words like "rooted" and "loosely based."
