I don't know...
If they would've taken it that little 'X-tra' step like say; Beavis & Butthead, early Ren & Stimpy, or early South Park, It Might've held my attention a little more often.

And that's all those shows are good for. Holding attention. They may not have decent plots or contain any actual humor in between the pretentious preaching and gag-inducing shock value, but gosh they sure make you stare with a vaguely perplexed expression.

At least when I watch "the simpsons" I don't have unpleasant memory fragments echoing in my head for the next seven years, making me think less of humanity and despise myself for living.

Hey it's still funnier than 90% of the stuff they throw on TV these days.
I've never found this to be a good argument in favor of any show, movie, band, etc.  If something entertains you, then by all means, stick up for it.
But this method of defense/advocacy makes it seem like people have a tv quota to fulfill and so they choose the least crappy of the crap rather than doing something else with their time.
I'll clarify. The Simpsons started from such an awesomely high peak that even after it slid a few notches, it's still very much worth watching. Just because it's not the best any more doesn't mean it's bad. :^) I'm not saying if you HAVE to watch something, you could do worse than the Simpsons, I'm saying that the decline of the Simpsons hasn't made it unworthy of being watched. :^)

... The Simpsons ...not the best any more ....

Please explain.... *finger is on the trigger*

I believe he's referring to the fact that the Simpsons hit its high around seasons 4-6 (if I'm not mistaken). That high is long gone so now Simpsons is one of the best shows on TV, just not THE BEST anymore. Trust me. Pak and I are both in front of that TV on most Sunday evenings watching. We always will so long as the show is still running.

I watch the Simpsons on syndication all the time, but I've only recently decided to start getting seasons on DVD. Any suggestions on which ones to get? I've been eyeballing season 4, if only for Mr. Plow.

I would specifically grab the very seasons I mentioned in my earlier post: 4-6.  Also, any Treehouse of Horror collections should be high on your list because they are on mine.  ;D

I just picked up Season 5 and every episode on it makes me a very happy man. :^)

I may try and make a mantine (sp) out of it, or just netflix it.

You'll see the movie with a ponderous Floridian aquatic mammal?
